Based on the minimum oral lethal dose of 57mg/kg in humans (CICAD 33, 2002), the substance was classified as Category 3. There are also findings that the minimum lethal dose in humans is 17mg/kg (equivalent to Category 2, RTECS(2004)), and that the LD50 = 418mg/kg (EHC 107, 1990) and 800mg/kg (equivalent to Category 4, EHC 107, 1990) in the oral administration tests with rats.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible - - - - No data available
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - No data available
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - - No data available

7 Reproductive toxicity Category 2 Warning H361: Suspected of damaging fertility or the unborn child P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention.
P201: Obtain special instructions before use.
P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood.

Effects on spermatogenesis/oogenesis and testis/ovary were seen by inhaled administration to both male and female rats (EHC 107, 1990; CICAD 33, 2001), and fetus lethal toxicity was seen by oral administration to pregnant rats (EHC 107, 1990), so it was set as Category 2. In addition, CICAD 33 (2002) describes about barium and barium compound, "Although the data from animal tests is limited, currently accessible data does not indicate a hazard of barium concerning reproductive development toxicity."
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Category 1 (nervous system, heart, digestive system, muscle) Danger H370: Causes damage to organs (nervous system, heart, digestive system, muscle) P307+P311: IF exposed: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
P260: Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
It was considered as Category 1 (a nervous systems, the heart, an alimentary system, muscles) from the description of the symptom (a paralysis state, spasm, nausea, vomiting) which derives in nervous systems and digestive systems in the report of oral exposure in humans (EHC 107, 1990; CICAD 33, 2001; RTECS, 2004), and the effect on the heart (CICAD 33, 2001; RTECS, 2004), and muscle paralysis (CICAD 33, 2001).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - Although there was description that the heart, liver, and the kidney were affected in the repeated inhalation exposure test for one month and four months to a rat (CICAD 33, 2001;IUCLID, 2000), since this is out of Category 2, it could not be classified due to insufficient data.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available
