The LD50 for rats given to nitroglycerin is 100 mg/kg (calculated by the Japanese Government's agency which conducted classifications) and that for rats given nitrocellulose is > 5000 mg/kg (Japanese Government's classification). Based on the nitroglycerin LD50 value, the LD50 for this compound was computed to be 167 mg/kg and was classified into Category 3 (we ignored the toxic value for nitrocellulose in calculations).
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible - - - - Classification of nitroglycerin is not possible due to lack of test results (Japanese Government's classification), and nitrocellulose was classified into the "Not classified" category based on its LD50 value of > 29200. Giving priority to the classification of nitroglycerin, this compound was classified into the "Classification not possible" category.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Solid
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - Since both nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose are classified into the "Classification not possible" category, this compound was classified into the "Classification not possible" category.

P337+P313: If eye irritation persists: Get medical advice/attention.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
Because nitroglycerin is classified into Category 2A to 2B, this compound was also classified into Category 2A to 2B assuming the same cutoff values.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - Since both nitroglycerin and nitrocellulose have been classified into the "Classification not possible" category, this compound was classified into the "Classification not possible" category.
4 Skin sensitization Category 1 Warning H317: May cause an allergic skin reaction P302+P352: IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of soap and water.
P333+P313: If skin irritation or rash occurs: Get medical advice/attention.
P261: Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P272: Contaminated work clothing should not be allowed out of the workplace.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P363: Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Because nitroglycerin is classified into Category 1, this compound was also classified into Category 1 assuming the same cutoff values.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - - Because nitroglycerin is classified into the "Classification not possible" category, this compound was classified into the "Classification not possible" category.

P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood.
P281: Use personal protective equipment as required.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Because nitroglycerin is classified into Category 2, this compound was also classified into Category 2 assuming the same cutoff values.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Category 1 (cardiovascular system, blood) Danger H370: Causes damage to organs (cardiovascular system, blood) P307+P311: IF exposed: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.

11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 2 - - H401: Toxic to aquatic life P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Regarding nitroglycerin (CAS: 55-63-0), its 96-hour LC50 for fish (bluegulls) is 1.38 mg/L (Hazard Data Book for Chemical Substance (CERI), 2002) and it is classified into Category 2. Regarding nitrocellulose (CAS: 9004-70-0), its 96-hour EC50 for algae (Selenastrum) is 579000 microg/L (AQUIRE, 2003) and it is classified into the "Not classified" category. As this compound is composed of 60% nitroglycerin, 15% nitrocellulose, and 25% water, it was classified into Category 2.
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Category 2 - H411: Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P391: Collect spillage.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Regarding nitroglycerin (CAS: 55-63-0), its classification for acute toxicity is Category 2, its potential for bioaccumulation is presumably low (log Kow = 1.62 (PHYSPROP Database, 2005), and it is estimated not to be rapidly degradable (BIOWIN). Based on this information, nitroglycerin was classified into Category 2. Regarding nitrocellulose (CAS: 9004-70-0), it is water soluble (water solubility = 1.00*10^6 mg/L (PHYSPROP Database, 2005) and its acute toxicity is low. Based on this information, nitrocellulose was classified into the "Not classified" category. As this compound is composed of 60% nitroglycerin, 15% nitrocellulose, and 25% water, it was classified into Category 2.
