HEALTH HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Category 4 Warning H302: Harmful if swallowed P301+P312: IF SWALLOWED: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.
P330: Rinse mouth.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since its rat LD50 = 378 mg/kg for rats in an oral administration test (Patty 5th, 2001), we classified the substance into Category 4.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Since the substance is a solid (GHS definition), it was classified into the "Not applicable" category.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Category 1A-1C Danger H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage P301+P330+P331: IF SWALLOWED: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting.
P303+P361+P353: IF ON SKIN (or hair): Remove/Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower.
P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P304+P340: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.
P260: Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P363: Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
As it is a skin irritant or vesicant (Patty 5th 2001), it is also assumed to be corrosive. Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1A-1C. We were unable to conduct sub-categorization based on the information currently available.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 1 Danger H318: Causes serious eye damage P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
As it is a skin irritant or vesicant (Patty 5th 2001), it is also expected to be corrosive and cause severe eye damage. Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Category 1 Warning H317: May cause an allergic skin reaction P302+P352: IF ON SKIN: Wash with plenty of soap and water.
P333+P313: If skin irritation or rash occurs: Get medical advice/attention.
P261: Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P272: Contaminated work clothing should not be allowed out of the workplace.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P363: Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since the substance is documented to be a skin sensitizer (Patty 5th, 2001), it was classified into Category 1.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Category 2 Warning H341: Suspected of causing genetic defects P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention.
P201: Obtain special instructions before use.
P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood.
P281: Use personal protective equipment as required.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
It did not cause dominant lethal mutations in mice (IARC S7 (1987)). It gave positive results for mutation in the mouse spot test; it induced chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei in bone-marrow cells of mice and sister chromatid exchanges in bone-marrow cells of mice and Chinese hamsters treated in vivo (IARC S7 (1987)). Positive results were also attained in in vitro tests such as chromosomal aberration test and DNA strand break test (IARC S7 (1987)). Since there is no in vivo germ cell mutagenicity test is available, the substance was classified into Category 2.
6 Carcinogenicity Category 1B Danger H350: May cause cancer P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention.
P201: Obtain special instructions before use.
P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood.
P281: Use personal protective equipment as required.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since it is rated as "Group 2A" by the IARC (IARC S7 1987) and "R" by the NTP (U.S. NTP, 2005), the substance was classified into Category 1B.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - In pregnant mice received intraperitoneal administration, abnormalities such as hydrocephalus and cleft palate in fetuses, and a decreased number of progeny were observed (HSDB, 2003). However, since administration of the substance was carried out through an unconventional method in this test, the substance was classified into the "Classification not possible" category due to insufficient test results available.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
