HEALTH HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Category 4 Warning H302: Harmful if swallowed P301+P312: IF SWALLOWED: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.
P330: Rinse mouth.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since its rat LD50 = 321 mg/kg (Patty 5th, 2001), the substance was classified into Category 4.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Since the substance is a solid (GHS definition), it was classified into the "Not applicable" category.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Category 3 - Warning H316: Causes mild skin irritation P332+P313: If skin irritation occurs: Get medical advice/attention. Transient superficial burns were observed on rabbit skin after being exposed to the substance for many hours (Patty 5th, 2001). However, since the burn happened after many hours of contact, was transient, and was only a superficial alteration, we determined it to be a mild burn and classified the substance into Category 3.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2 Warning H319: Causes serious eye irritation P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P337+P313: If eye irritation persists: Get medical advice/attention.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
Because moderate irritation and slight corneal injury were observed in rabbit eyes applied with the substance (Patty 5th, 2001), the substance was classified into Category 2. Due to difficulty in doing so, we did not carry out sub-categorization.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Category 2 Warning H341: Suspected of causing genetic defects P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention.
P201: Obtain special instructions before use.
P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood.
P281: Use personal protective equipment as required.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
There are reports that a micronucleus test using mouse bone-marrow cells and one using rat bone-marrow cells both gave positive results (IARC vol. 73 (1999)). Since there are no in vivo germ cell genotoxicity test results available, the substance was classified into Category 2.
6 Carcinogenicity Category 2 Warning H351: Suspected of causing cancer P308+P313: IF exposed or concerned: Get medical advice/attention.
P201: Obtain special instructions before use.
P202: Do not handle until all safety precautions have been read and understood.
P281: Use personal protective equipment as required.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since the substance is rated as "Group 2B" by the IARC (IARC vol. 73 (1999)), it was classified into Category 2.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - No test results are available on this substance and classification is not possible. Sodium bromate, which is similar in chemical structure to potassium bromide, is reported to have no toxic effects on reproduction and development of rats in oral administration tests through drinking water (IARC vol. 73 (1999)).
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Category 1 (central nervous system, kidney, circulatory system, liver), Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation) Danger
Warning
H370: Causes damage to organs (central nervous system, kidney, circulatory system, liver)
H335: May cause respiratory irritation (respiratory tract irritation)
P307+P311: IF exposed: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
P260: Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
P304+P340: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.
P403+P233: Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed.
P261: Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P271: Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
P312: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell.
There are reported human cases of effects on the central nervous system, necrosis of the kidneys, cardiotoxicity and hepatotoxicity being observed, which are associated with the substance (IARC vol. 73 (1999)), JECFA 30 (1993)). There is also a report that single exposure of the substance causes respiratory tract irritation (ICSC 2003). Based on these results, the substance was classified into Category 1 for the central nervous system, kidney, circulatory system, and liver, and Category 3 for respiratory tract irritation.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - In animal studies, changes in organ weights and body weights were noted at doses that fall under Category 2 (JECFA 30 (1993)). However, since no additional test results are available, the substance was classified into the "Classification not possible" category due to insufficient data available.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
