In vivo alkaline elution assay gave positive results (IUCLID (2000)) and in inhalation exposure test using rats, DNA damage was found in the lung (RTECS accessed in October 2007). Since various in vitro tests gave positive results (IARC 49 (1990)) and water-soluble Cr (VI) compounds were suggested to be mutagenic in in-vivo system (EU-RAR (2005), IARC 49 (1990)), we classified the substance into Category 2.

There is a report that inhalation by humans of aqueous solutions of Cr (VI) mists have resulted in necrosis of the bronchi and edemas of the lungs. In addition, swallowing of the substance by humans resulted in liver and kidney damage (EU-RAR (2005)). Based on these results, the substance was classified into Category 1 (respiratory system, kidney, and liver).
