HEALTH HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Category 4 Warning H302: Harmful if swallowed P301+P312: IF SWALLOWED: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.
P330: Rinse mouth.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
From a description of LD50 value of 1,840 mg/kg (MOE Risk Assessment, Volume 6 (2008), HSDB (2004)) in the oral administration test employing rats, it was classified into Category 4.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible - - - - Classification not possible due to lack of data
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Since it was a solid by the definition of GHS and inhalation in gas was not assumed, it was classified into "Not applicable".
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - Classification not possible due to lack of data
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - - Classification not possible due to lack of data
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Classification not possible - - - - Although there is a description, "There is skin irritation" in the section of Human Symptoms in HSDB (2004), classification is not possible, because the degree of irritation is unknown. Incidentally, although there is a description, "Reddening is caused from contact with the skin," in the Environmental Risk Evaluation Document Vol 6 (2008), it is not adopted, because this cited literature is from ICSC (1997) and skin irritation is not described in the section of Short Term Exposure.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2 Warning H319: Causes serious eye irritation P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P337+P313: If eye irritation persists: Get medical advice/attention.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
There is a description of "Eyes are stimulated."(Environment risk assessment, Volume 6 (2008)), and there is also a description of "Eyes are stimulated." in the paragraph of the short-term exposure effects of ICSC (1997). Although there is a description of "It has eyes irritation" in the paragraph of the the human symptoms of HSDB (2004), since any of the symptoms had unknown level and recoverability, it was not classified finely and was classified into Category 2.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - Classification is not possible since there is no data.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - - There is no data for this substance. Although there is a description of "cutaneous photosensitivity" (HSDB (2004)) as human influence of Methylnaphthalenes, classification is not possible because of lack of data.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - - There are descriptions that "chromosomal aberration and sister chromatid exchange were not induced in lymphoid cell humans peripheral" (ATSDR (2005)) and that the reverse mutation test employing a Salmonella typhimurium was "negative" in the in vitro examination (NTP DB (Access on January 2009)). However, classification is not possible because there is no data of an in vivo examination.
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - - Although ACGIH-TLV/BEI (2005) has a description that "evaluation of ACGIH TLV-NIC is A4", classification is not possible since it is not a evaluation of the whole ACGIH. In addition, in the 81-week study which administered male and female mice with mixed feed, there is a description that "the increase in significant bronchus/lung adenomatosis was statistically seen in males, but not in females" (ATSDR (2005)).
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - Although there is a descriptionas follows in the 81 week oral administration study with male and female mice, "No damage was caused to male and female genital organs" (ATSDR (2005)), classification is not possible, because there is no datum for the effect on reproductive functions and child animals.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Category 3 (Narcotic effects, Respiratory tract irritation) Warning H336: May cause drowsiness or dizziness (narcotic effects, respiratory tract irritation)
H335: May cause respiratory irritation (narcotic effects, respiratory tract irritation)
P304+P340: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.
P403+P233: Store in a well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly closed.
P261: Avoid breathing dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P271: Use only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area.
P312: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
There is a description of "it was classified into the fall of pain since reaction time increased in a slight forelimb lack to caloric stimulation" in the 4-hours inhalation exposure test employing rats. (ATSDR (2005)). Moreover, since the clause of the human condition of HSDB (2004) has had a description of "There may be the irritation to a membrane and an upper airway, visual impairment, and coma", it was classified into Category 3 (Narcotic effects, Respiratory tract irritation).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Category 2 (lung) Warning H373: May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure (lung) P260: Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P314: Get medical advice/attention if you feel unwell.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
In 13 weeks mixed feed administration test employing mice "Affection other than growth suppression has not been seen." , and in 81weeks mixed feed administration test using a mouse, there is a description of "Alveolar proteinosis was seen."(ATSDR (2005)). Since the alveolar proteinosis was seen within the range of guidance value of Category 2, it was classified into Category 2 (lungs). ICSC (1997) has described as "Lungs may be risked by repeated or long-term exposure." In addition, in the test where the mixture of 1-Methylnaphthalene and 2-Methylnaphthalene was applied to mice's skins for 30 weeks twice/week, there is a description of "Alveolar proteinosis was seen."(ATSDR (2005)).
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - Classification not possible due to lack of data

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 2 - - H401: Toxic to aquatic life P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
It was classified into Category 2 from 24 hours IC50=1.61mg/L of the crustacea (Brine Shrimp) (MOE Risk Assessment vol. 2 (2003)).
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Category 2 - H411: Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P391: Collect spillage.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since acute toxicity was Category 2 and there were no rapidly degrading (not readily degradable, the decomposition by BOD(standard test method (4 weeks)): 2% (Existing Chemical Safety Inspections Data (2004)), it was classified into Category 2.
