In primary skin irritation tests, the substance was topically applied onto 6 rabbits for 24 hours, and during the 21-day observation, the average scores of the Primary Dermal Irritation Index after 24-72 hours indicated that the substance was corrosive (HSDB (2003)). Other tests also reported that the substance was highly corrosive (IUCLID (2000)) or causes immediate necrosis (IUCLID (2000)). Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1.

In oral administration tests, rats were administered at 80mg/kg, a dose that induces general toxicity such as decreased body weight gain and decreased food consumption in parental rats (both sexes). This administration resulted in severely decreased survival rates in neonates, unkempt fur and neglected brood collection during nurturing periods (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council)), (accessed June 2008). From these results, the substance was classified into Category 2. Although 2 of the 12 treated female rats died after 21-22 days of gestation, the dose that induced developmental toxicity (80mg/kg) was lower than the rat oral LD50 values (200mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)) and 240mg/kg (ca.) (HSDB (2003)).

In 28-day repeated oral administration tests, rats administered at 70mg/kg showed salivation and convulsions under normal conditions, suggesting that the substance has toxicological effects on the autonomic nervous system. The no-observed effect level has been documented to be 20mg/kg for both sexes (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (2008)). Since the 90-day conversion of the NOEL 20mg/kg is 64mg/kg, which is equivalent to Category 2 guidance values, the substance was classified into Category 2 (nervous system).
