HEALTH HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified - - - - Since its LD50 for rats is documented to be approximately 2480 mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)), the substance was classified into "Not classified" using JIS classification criteria (equivalent to Category 5 in UN classification).
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Liquid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - As the solely available datum is that its LC50 > 1.203 mg/L/4h for rats (IUCLID (2000)), there is lack of data. Thus, classification is not possible.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Category 1 Danger H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage P301+P330+P331: IF SWALLOWED: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting.
P303+P361+P353: IF ON SKIN (or hair): Remove/Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower.
P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P304+P340: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.
P260: Do not breathe dust/fume/gas/mist/vapours/spray.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P363: Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
It has been documented that after application to rabbit skin for 24 hours, the substance was found to be strongly irritating and to cause burns (IUCLID (2000)). It is rated in C; R34. Although its effects after four-hour exposure are not known, based on above results, the substance was classified into Category 1.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 1 Danger H318: Causes serious eye damage P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
It is reported that after application to rabbit eyes, the substance was found to be slightly irritating (IUCLID (2000)). While it showed corrosion to skin the substance was classified into Category 1. As relevant information, it is rated C;R34 in the UN classification, and the pH of the water solution is approximately 2.9 (GESTIS (accessed July 2008)).
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - - Since there is no available in vivo test data, classification is not possible. As relevant information, as for an in vitro mutagenicity test, results of an Ames test (NTP DB (accessed July 2007)) and a micronucleus test using hamster V9 cells (IUCLID (2000)) were negative.
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 2 - - H401: Toxic to aquatic life P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since its 96h LC50 = 2.45 mg/L for fish (rainbow trout) (AQUIRE, 2008), the substance was classified into Category 2.
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Category 2 - H411: Toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P391: Collect spillage.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since its preexisting classification for acute toxicity is Category 2 and it is estimated not to be rapidly degradable, the substance was classified into Category 2.
