HEALTH HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Category 4 Warning H302: Harmful if swallowed P301+P312: IF SWALLOWED: Call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician if you feel unwell.
P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P270: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product.
P330: Rinse mouth.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since its rat LD50 = 980 mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)) and it is rated Xn; R22 in the EU classification, the substance was classified into Category 4.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified - - - - Based on its mortality of 0/10 in rats at the dose of 2000 mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)), the substance was classified into "Not classified".
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Category 1 Danger H314: Causes severe skin burns and eye damage P301+P330+P331: IF SWALLOWED: Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting.
P303+P361+P353: IF ON SKIN (or hair): Remove/Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water/shower.
P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P304+P340: IF INHALED: Remove victim to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing.

P264: Wash ... thoroughly after handling.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
P321: Specific treatment (see ... on this label).
P363: Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
P405: Store locked up.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Since it is documented that in a rabbit test (OECD TG 404), the substance was corrosive (IUCLID (2000)), and it is rated C; R34 in the EU classification, the substance was classified into Category 1.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 1 Danger H318: Causes serious eye damage P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
Since in a rabbit test (OECD TG 405), the substance showed to be highly irritating (IUCLID (2000)), and its preexisting classification for skin corrosion is Category 1, the substance was classified into Category 1.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - - It is reported that in human patch tests, the substance showed 1/4 individual positive and 1/18 dental nurse positive, respectively (IUCLID (2000)). However, since there is no other information available, classification is not possible.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Not classified - - - - Since in a micronucleus test using mouse bone marrow cells (OECD TG 474) (in vivo mutagenicity test using somatic cells), the substance was negative (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (accessed in November 2008)), it was classified into "Not classified". As relevant information, as for in vitro in vitro mutagenicity tests, in an Ames test, it was negative, and in a chromasomal aberration test using CHL cells, it indicated positive results (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (accessed in September 2008)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - In an oral administration test using rats (OECD TG 422), no significant difference in parental estrous cycle, copulation rate, conception rate, gestation period, number of corpcera lutea, number of implantation, or birth rate was noted relative to those in the control group. Regarding fetuses, decreased body weight gain was seen at high concentrations, but no significant difference was seen in number of births, sex ratio, live birth index, and neonate survival rate. No changes related to teratogenicity were also noted (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (accessed in September 2008)). However, since the test did not provide sufficient information on fetal developmental toxicity, and due to the lack of data, the substance was classified into "Classification not possible".
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - In an oral administration test by gavage using rats (OECD TG 422) (doses, 8, 40, 200 mg/kg/day: males, for 43 days; females, from 14 days before mating to 3 days after nursing), at doses of 40 mg/kg/day or more, in both males and females, mucosal hyperplasia, inflammatory cell infiltration, and edema were seen in the forestomach (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (accessed in September 2008)). However, these findings were considered to be caused by irritation of the substance, and at the dose of 200 mg/kg/day, which is above the guidance value of Category 2, body weight suppression and a case of death were found in males, and decreased spontaneous movement and ataxia of gait were confirmed in females, but no other effects were not observed. Also, in an oral administration test via food for 19 weeks using rats (doses, 1000, 10000 ppm/kg (ca. 75, 750 mg/kg/day)), at doses up to 750 mg/kg, which are equivalent to the guidance value of Category 2, no effects were observed (IUCLID (2000)). Therefore, the substance should be classified into "Not classified" (oral). However, since there is no information on other routes, it was classified into "Classification not possible".
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
Hazard class Classification Symbol Signal word Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 2 - - H401: Toxic to aquatic life P273: Avoid release to the environment.
P501: Dispose of contents/container to ...
Based on its 48h-EC50 = 4.5 mg/L for crustaceans (Daphinia magna) (Test for the Ecological Effect of Chemical Substances (Ministry of the Environment), 2004), the substance was classified into Category 2.
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Not classified - - - - Its preexisting classification for acute toxicity is Category 2, and it is not rapidly biodegradable (non-biodegradable; BOD degradability, 0% (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 1996)). However, its 72h-NOEC = 1.9 mg/L for algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) (Test for the Ecological Effect of Chemical Substances (Ministry of the Environment), 2004). Therefore, the substance was classified into "Not classified".
