Based on the classification of "Group 1" in IARC (IARC suppl. 7 (1987), 100A (2009)), the substance was classified into Category 1A. It was reported that subcutaneous injections induced local subcutaneous sarcomas in rats and the incidences of lung tumours per mouse were increased in a 39-week intraperitoneal injection test (IARC vol. 4 (1974)). For humans, it was reported that among 61 patients with polycythaemia vera treated with the substance, eight developed invasive carcinoma of the bladder (IARC suppl. 7 (1987)).
