The substance was classified as Category 1 based on the physicochemical property of pH 2.0 (saturated aqueous solution at 20 degree centigrade) ("Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals" (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (Access on Aug. 2010)).
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 1 Danger H318: Causes serious eye damage P305+P351+P338: IF IN EYES: Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing.
P280: Wear protective gloves/protective clothing/eye protection/face protection.
P310: Immediately call a POISON CENTER or doctor/physician.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - - No data available.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - - The classification was not possible due to lack of in vivo test data. As relevant information, as for in vitro studies, negative results in the Ames test and in the chromosome aberration test using CHL/IU cells were reported ("Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals"(Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council), Access on Aug. 2010)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - - It was reported that no adverse effects were observed in the growth rate, mortality and pathological examination in the 2-year dietary administration study in rats with the concentrations of 0.3 - 3% of this substance (JECFA FAS51 (1974)). However, since only this information mentioned was insufficient to be the basis for classification, the classification was not possible.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - - In the reproductive toxicity screening test (OECD TG421) in rats by oral administration from 2 weeks before mating to post-delivery day 3, treatment-related death was found at high dose (1,000 mg/kg). Abnormal findings in the histopathological examination such as atrophy of seminiferous tubule in the testis were observed in males of the 300 mg/kg group, thus, treatment-related effect on fertility was suggested from these findings. However, there were no treatment-related adverse effects on the mean duration of estrus cycle and copulation. All dams delivered normally, and reproduction indices such as the pregnancy, delivery and the birth revealed no treatment-related influence. And, there were no treatment-related effects on the viability of offspring, state of the offspring at post delivery day 0 and day 4 ("Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals" (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (Access on Aug. 2010)). Therefore, no effects on sexual functions and fertility of parental animals were observed. However, since data on the development of the offspring were insufficient, the substance was classified as "Classification not possible".
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible - - - - In the acute oral toxicity study in rats administered at the dose of 2000 mg/kg, no deaths occurred and no test substance related effects were noted in observations of general conditions, body weight measurements and necropsy ("Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals" (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (Access on Aug. 2010)). Based on the results, classification was equivalent to "Not classified" for oral route. the classification for specific target organ toxicity (single exposure) was determined as "Classification not possible" because the effects for other routes were unknown due to lack of data.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - - Insufficient data were available. As relevant information, in the 28-day repeated dose oral toxicity study in rats, it was reported that the NOAEL was 200 mg/kg/day (converted dose level as that of 90-day study: 62.2 mg/kg/day) based on the results that possible treatment-related changes were observed in clinical signs and in stomach of both sexes at 1000 mg/kg/day (converted dose level as that of 90-day study: 311 mg/kg/day) ("Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals" (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (Access on Aug. 2010)). However, the results were unable to use for classification because the effects at near the upper limit dose of the guidance values (100 mg/kg/day) were unknown. Additionally, no obvious toxic effects on growth rate, mortality rate and histopathological examination were noted by 2-year dietary administration to rats at the concentrations of 0.3 - 3% (JECFA FAS 51 (1974)), but details were unknown due to no further information.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - - No data available.

Classified into Category 3 from its 72h-ErC50 = 50 mg/L for algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) (Test for the Ecological Effect of Chemical Substances (Ministry of the Environment), 2002).
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Not classified - - - - Classified as "Not classified" since it is judged to be rapidly degradable (Readily biodegradable, BOD degradation rate: 47, 94, 93% (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 1997)) though the acute toxicity is Category 3.
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible - - - - This substance is not listed in Annexes to the Montreal Protocol.
