A flash point of 48 degrees C [closed cup] (HSDB (2009)), which is >= 23 degrees C and <= 60 degrees C, corresponds to Category 3.
Besides, it is classified in 3PGIII in UNRTDG (3056).

8 Self-reactive substances and mixtures Not applicable - - - Containing neither chemical groups related to explosibility nor those related to self-reactivity.
9 Pyrophoric liquids Not classified - - - It is conceivable that it does not ignite at normal temperatures from an autoignition temperature of 250 degrees C (HSDB (2009)).
10 Pyrophoric solids Not applicable - - - "Liquids" according to GHS definition.
11 Self-heating substances and mixtures Classification not possible - - - No established test method suitable for liquid substances.

13 Oxidizing liquids Not applicable - - - An organic compound that contains oxygen which is not chemically bonded to elements other than carbon.
14 Oxidizing solids Not applicable - - - "Liquids" according to GHS definition.
15 Organic peroxides Not applicable - - - An organic compound that does not contain -O-O- structure.
16 Corrosive to metals Classification not possible - - - No data.

HEALTH HAZARDS

Hazard statement Precautionary statement Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified - - - On the basis of an LD50 value of > 5000 mg/kg bw for rats (USEPA/HPV (2004), equivalent to List 1), it was classified as "Not classified."
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified - - - On the basis of an LD50 value of > 5000 mg/kg bw for rabbits (USEPA/HPV (2004)), it was classified as "Not classified."
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable - - - "Liquids" according to GHS definition.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible - - - It was classified as "Classification not possible" because the category cannot be determined from an LC50 value of > 4.7 mg/L/4 h for rats (> 1006.7 ppm/4h) (USEPA/HPV (2004)).
Besides, a reference value of gasses as vapour with hardly included mist is applied because the test concentration (1006.7 ppm) is lower than 90 % of the saturated vapour pressure concentration (4632 ppm).
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible - - - No data.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Category 2

On the basis of a Primary Irritation Index (PII) of 5.0 in a test (OECD TG 404, GLP compliance), in which moderate erythema and slight oedema were observed until 7 days after the application of 0.5 mL of an undiluted test substance solution to rabbit skins for 4 hours (ECETOC TR 66 (1995)), it was classified in Category 2.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2B

P264
On the basis of a report of Draize test using rabbits, all of which were completely recovered from the observed changes such as ulceration in the cornea in 4 out of 6 rabbits, iritis in 5, and ulceration in conjunctiva in 5 within 7 days (IUCLID (2000)), it was classified in Category 2B.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - No data.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - A maximization test using 25 humans reported that this substance produced no contact-sensitization (HSDB (2009)).
Besides, positive responses in a guinea pig maximization test, which were shown in 4 out of 18 animals 24 hours after a challenge procedure and were shown in 3 out of 18 animals after 48 hours (HSDB (2009)), were below 30 % of criteria.
But it was classified as "Classification not possible" due to information from List 2.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - The classification is not possible due to no in vivo data.
Besides, a negative in an Ames test (NTP DB (1987)) and a negative in a forward mutation test using mouse lymphoma (USEPA/HPV (2004)) were reported respectively as in vitro tests.
In addition, a negative result was reported in a micronucleus test in which 2,6-dimethyl-5-heptanal as structurally related aldehyde was administrated to mice by intraperitoneal injection (an in vivo somatic cell mutagenicity test) (USEPA/HPV (2004)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - No data.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - A reproduction test reports that no evidence of reproductive toxicity was found in female rats in oral administration of this substance at 2050 mg/kg/day.
But a number of parameters measuring reproduction are limited, and quality and reliability of data are uncertain (USEPA/HPV (2004)).
Therefore, it was classified as "Classification not possible" due to lack of data.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Category 3 (Respiratory tract irritation)

No deaths were shown by inhalation exposure at a concentration of 4.7 mg/L for 4 hours, but weight gains were observed during the week after exposure, and symptoms such as labored breathing, gasping, dry rales and nasal discharge were shown (HSDB (2009)).
Therefore, it was classified in Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - A 29-day gavage administration test to rats reports hypertrophy of hepatocyte, decreased periportal cavitation, increased liver weight accompanied by increased cytoplasmic density at doses of 1500 mg/kg/day or higher, no significant signs related to dosing at a dose of 300 mg/kg/day, and a NOAEL of 300 mg/kg/day (USEPA/HPV (2004)). The dose of 300 mg/kg/day (converted to a 90-day equivalent value: 96.7 mg/kg/day) almost corresponds to the upper limit in Guideline values (100 mg/kg/day).
Besides, a 90-day diet administration test to rats reported a slight decrease in renal concentrating ability and elevated serum glucose levels at a maximal dose of 150 mg/kg bw/day, but no serious adverse effects related to the administration (USEPA/HPV (2004)). Therefore, it is judged that it corresponds to "Not classified" in an oral route.
On the other hand, a dermal administration test, in which rabbits were treated with a dose of 500 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks (converted to a 90-day equivalent value: 76.7 mg/kg/day) and were treated without dosing for 2 weeks, reports only local effects but no systemic effects (USEPA/HPV (2004). The classification is not possible due to a single dose test within a range of guidance values.
Besides, effects on inhalation administration are unknown due to no data.
From the above, it was classified as "Classification not possible" in specific target organ toxicity (repeated exposures).
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - No data.

Reliable chronic toxicity data are not obtained.
It was classified in Category 2 due to lack of appropriate data on rapid degradability and acute toxicity Category 2.
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible - - - This substance is not listed in Annexes to the Montreal Protocol.
