Rationale for the classification
1 Explosives Not classified - - - It contains a chemical group associated with explosive properties (O-halogen), but it does not correspond to superior explosives due to class 5.1 subsidiary risk 6.1 in UNRTDG (UN1447).
2 Flammable gases (including chemically unstable gases) Not applicable - - - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
3 Aerosols Not applicable - - - Not an aerosol product.
4 Oxidizing gases Not applicable - - - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
5 Gases under pressure Not applicable - - - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
6 Flammable liquids Not applicable - - - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
7 Flammable solids Not classified - - - It was classified as "Not classified" from information that it is non-flammable (Hommel (1996)).
8 Self-reactive substances and mixtures Not applicable - - - It was classified as an oxidizing substance.
9 Pyrophoric liquids Not applicable - - - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
10 Pyrophoric solids Not classified - - - There is information that it is non-flammable (Hommel (1996)).
11 Self-heating substances and mixtures Not classified - - - There is information that it is non-flammable (Hommel (1996)).
12 Substances and mixtures which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases Not classified - - - It contains a metal (Ba), but it is judged to be stable in the water from water solubility data of 312g/100 g at 20 degrees C (CRC (91st, 2010)).
13 Oxidizing liquids Not applicable - - - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
14 Oxidizing solids Category 2

Due to an oxidizer (Sax (11th, 2004)) and class 5.1 PGII in UNRTDG (UN1447), it was classified in Category 2.
15 Organic peroxides Not applicable - - - It is an inorganic compound.
16 Corrosive to metals Classification not possible - - - No established test method suitable for solid substances.

There are no data on this substance.
However, on the basis of multiple descriptions of barium or barium compounds which show irritation to skin such as barium chlorate as an analog substance causes irritation to skin (HSDB (2002)), barium and soluble barium compounds have skin irritation (ACGIH (2001)), and barium causes mild skin irritation to rabbits (EHC107 (1990)), it was classified in Category 2.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2A

However, on the basis of multiple descriptions of barium or barium compounds which show irritation to eyes such as barium chlorate as an analog substance causes irritation to eyes (HSDB (2002)), barium and soluble barium compounds have eye irritation (ACGIH (2001)), and barium causes severe eye irritation to rabbits (EHC107 (1990)), it was classified in Category 2A.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible - - - No data.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible - - - No data.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible - - - No data.
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible - - - No data.
Besides, barium and soluble barium are classified in A4 in ACGIH (ACGIH (2001)).
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible - - - No data.

But there is the information that barium ion is a muscle poison and the poisoning cases caused by barium compounds show gastrointestinal injuries followed by adverse myocardial stimulation (ACGIH (2001)). Furthermore, acute gastroenteritis and muscular paralysis caused by loss of deep reflexes are reported (EHC107 (1990)).
Therefore, it was classified in Category 1 (muscle, heart, digestive system).
Besides, salivation, nausea, diarrhoea, tachycardia, hypokalemia, twitching, flaccid paralysis of skeletal muscle, respiratory muscle paralysis, and ventricular fibrillation were reported as acute effects after oral administration in rats (EHC107 (1990)).
Furthermore, there is the information that inhalation of barium chlorate as an analog substance causes irritation to a respiratory tract (HSDB (2002)), therefore, it was classified in Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible - - - No data.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible - - - No data.
