In a skin irritation test in which six rabbits were given a 4-hour semi-occlusive application of 0.5 mL of this substance (OECD TG 404, GLP), severe lesions were observed 72 hours after the application, and all the animals showed no noticeable recovery on day 14. The primary dermal irritation index was 4.17, and it was judged as corrosive (SIDS (2005)). Therefore, it was classified in Category 1. Besides, in the test, 3-minute exposure also caused erythema and edema, the dermal irritation index was 2.94, and irritation was found (SIDS (2005)). |

In a test in which 0.1 mL of undiluted this substance was applied to nine rabbits (eyes of three of them were washed 20-30 seconds after the application) (GLP-compliant), it caused severe injury within 24 hours characterized by complete opacification of the cornea, the iris being barely visible, the lids being almost closed, and severe erythema and edema in the conjunctiva. The lesion persisted for six days, accompanied by hemorrhage and purulence on day 7, and it was assessed as highly corrosive (SIDS (2005)). In an acute oral toxicity test with rats (OECD TG 401, GLP) (doses: 800, 1300, 1450, 1600, 1750, 2000 mg/kg bw), an LD50 value was 1602 mg/kg, and clinical signs found were labored breathing, rales, red stains around the snout and extremities, salivation, lacrimation, lethargy, irregular gait, hunched posture, red urination, black/brown anogenital staining, paleness, chromodacryorrhea, and hypothermia. The principal necropsy findings involved the stomach and were stomach adhesions, thickened stomach walls, and abnormal stomach contents, which were considered to be due to corrosion of the mucosa (SIDS (2005)). From the above report, test doses were within the guidance value range for Category 2, but the target organ could not be specified. Therefore, it was classified in Category 2 (systemic toxicity). |
