Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified
-
-
- - There are three LD50 values for rats (500-5,000 mg/kg (USEPA/HPV (2001), corresponding to List 1), 6,892 mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)), > 5,000 mg/kg bw (IUCLID (2000))), one corresponds to Category 4 to "Not classified," and two correspond to"Not classified." Therefore, it was classified as "Not classified" to which most corresponded.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified
-
-
- - It was classified as "Not classified" based on an LD50 value of > 5,000 mg/kg for rabbits (USEPA/HPV (2001)).
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable
-
-
- - Liquid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Not classified
-
-
- - It was classified as "Not classified" because the average irritation score was 0.0 in a test by a 4-hour application to the skin of six rabbits (EPA 40CFR 798.4470, GLP), and there was no irritation (USEPA/HPV (2001)).
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2B
-
Warning
H320 P305+P351+P338
P337+P313
P264
In a test in which 0.1 mL of the test substance was applied to the eye of six rabbits (EPA 40CFR 798.4500, GLP), all animals showed slight to moderate irritation of the conjunctivae, and four had iridial and corneal changes including slight opacity of the corneal surface and corneal ulceration (USEPA/HPV (2001)). Because the above irritation signs disappeared in all the animals by seven days after the application (USEPA/HPV (2001)), it was classified in Category 2B.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Not classified
-
-
- - It was classified as "Not classified" based on a negative result in a micronucleus test with bone marrow cells after intraperitoneal administration to rats (in vivo somatic cell mutagenicity test) (NTP DB (Access on Aug. 2012)). Besides, as for in vitro tests, it was reported to be negative in an Ames test (JECFA 911 (2000), NTP DB (1988)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - Oral administration of 500 mg/kg to rats caused no abnormalities, and oral administration of 5,000 mg/kg caused lethargy in most animals and killed all the animals (10/10). It is reported that the necropsy of dead animals revealed discoloration/edema in the lung (USEPA/HPV (2001)). However, with the above results alone, it was impossible to judge effects around the upper limit (2,000 mg/kg) of the guidance value range, therefore it was classified as "Classification not possible." Besides, after dermal administration of 5,000 mg/kg to rats, no systemic effects were observed during the test period, and there were no abnormalities at necropsy (USEPA/HPV (2001)), so it corresponds to "Not classified" in the dermal route.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Category 2 (upper respiratory tract)

Warning
H373 P260
P314
P501
No effects related to administration of the test substance were observed on mortality, toxic signs, weight gain, food consumption, histological findings, neurobehavioral endpoints, sperm motility or morphology, or estrous cycle after 90-day inhalation exposure (6 hours/day, 5 days /week) to 400 mg/m3 in rats, treatment-related effects observed were primarily degeneration and atrophy of the olfactory mucosa in the nose in both males and females, and focal respiratory metaplasia of the olfactory mucosa was also found, although less commonly (USEPA/HPV (2001)). Based on the above results, it was classified in Category 2 (upper respiratory tract) because 400 mg/m3 corresponds to the guidance value range for Category 2.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.

Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 3
-
-
H402 P273
P501
It was classified in Category 3 from 96-hour LC50 = 50-100 mg/L for fish (Danio rerio) (IUCLID, 2000).
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Not classified
-
-
- - Reliable chronic toxicity data were not obtained. It was classified in Category 3 in acute toxicity. However, it is rapidly degradable (a degradation rate by BOD: 90% (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration Results of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 2000)), and low bioaccumulation is estimated (LogKow = 0.35 (NITE Chemical Risk Information Platform, 2012)). Therefore, it was classified as "Not classified."
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible
-
-
- - This substance is not listed in the Annexes to the Montreal Protocol.
