Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Category 4

Warning
H302 P301+P312
P264
P270
P330
P501
There is a report on LD50 values of 578 mg/kg and 2,220 mg/kg for rats (SIDS (2009)), which correspond to Category 4 and "Not classified," respectively. It was classified in Category 4 to which the minimum LD50 value corresponded.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, there is a report on an LD50 value of > 740 mg/kg for rats (SIDS (2009)).
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable
-
-
- - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Not applicable
-
-
- - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There is no information on this CAS RN.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Not classified
-
-
- - It is described in SIDS (2009) that there was irritation in a skin irritation test with rabbits (OECD TG 404) on a 40% aqueous solution of this substance, but the details of results such as the degree of irritation are unknown. Therefore, it was classified as "Not classified" (Category 3 in UN GHS classification).
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2B
-
Warning
H320 P305+P351+P338
P337+P313
P264
It was classified in Category 2B because it is described that it was irritating in an eye irritation test with rabbits (OECD TG 405), and all the findings disappeared within seven days (SIDS (2009)).
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
4 Skin sensitization Not classified
-
-
- - It is reported that it was negative in a test in 88 volunteers, and it was negative (positive in only one out of 13 animals) in a maximization test with guinea pigs (according to OECD TG 406) (SIDS (2009)). It was classified as "Not classified" because it is judged in SIDS (2009) that this substance is not a skin sensitizer based on the above results.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There are no in vivo data, and as for in vitro, it was negative in both of a bacterial reverse mutation test and a chromosomal aberration test with cultured mammalian cells (SIDS (2009), IUCLID (2000)). Besides, it is described in SIDS (2009) that the category of alpha-olefin sulfonates including this substance was assessed to be not mutagenic.
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There is no classification of carcinogenicity by the international organizations. Besides, it is reported in ECHA that no carcinogenicity was observed in a 104-week carcinogenicity test with rats by diet administration (non-guideline, non-GLP, reliability 2 (reliable with restrictions)) (ECHA (Access on December 2013)). This information was not used for classification because it is from the information source outside the list.
7 Reproductive toxicity Category 2

Warning
H361 P308+P313
P201
P202
P280
P405
P501
In a developmental toxicity test with rabbits, decreased fetal body weights, increased minor skeletal anomalies, and increased skeletal variations (lumbar ribs) were observed at the doses where maternal toxicity was seen (death 1/13 animals, anorexia, diarrhea). Furthermore, in a developmental toxicity test with mice, fetal death and malformations (cleft palate) were observed at the doses where maternal toxicity (piloerection, decreased activity) was found. No maternal toxicity or developmental toxicity was seen in a developmental toxicity test with rats (SIDS (2009)). Therefore, it was classified in Category 2. Besides, no fertility data were obtained.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Category 3 (Narcotic effects)

Warning
H336 P304+P340
P403+P233
P261
P271
P312
P405
P501
It was classified in Category 3 (narcotic effects) because reversible clonic cramps, squatting/lateral position, piloerection, hunched posture, abnormal gait, lethargy, etc. were observed after oral administration (1,500-4,000 mg/kg) to rats (SIDS (2009)). Besides, it is reported that no adverse effects were found after dermal exposure (2,000 mg/kg) in rats (SIDS (2009)).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - In a 2-year diet administration test with rats, only a slight reduction in weight gain was observed at the dose (5,000 ppm: equivalent to 195-259 mg/kg/day) above the range for Category 2 (SIDS (2009)). Therefore, it corresponds to "Not classified" in the oral route. However, because of no toxicity information on the other routes, it was classified as "Classification not possible" due to lack of data.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.

Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 2
-
-
H401 P273
P501
From 96-hour LC50 = 2.6 mg/L for fish (Danio rerio) (SIDS, 2009), it was classified in Category 2.
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Not classified
-
-
- - Reliable chronic toxicity data were not obtained. It is rapidly degradable (a degradation rate by DOC = 92.5-98.7% (SIDS, 2009)), and it was classified in Category 2 in acute toxicity, but evidence of high bioaccumulation was not obtained (LogKow (estimates) = 0.32 (SIDS, 2009)). Therefore, it was classified as "Not classified."
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible
-
-
- - This substance is not listed in the Annexes to the Montreal Protocol.
