Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified
-
-
- - Based on reports of LD50 values for rats of >3,200 mg/kg (SIDS (2009)), 8,700 mg/kg (SIDS (2009), ACGIH (7th, 2001)), 9,370 mg/kg (SIDS (2009)), it was classified as "Not classified."
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified
-
-
- - Based on a report of an LD50 value of >17,800 mg/kg for rabbits (SIDS (2009), ACGIH (7th, 2001)), it was classified as "Not classified."
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable
-
-
- - Liquid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Category 4

Warning
H332 P304+P340
P261
P271
P312
Based on reports that by 4-hour exposure at 8,000 ppm with rats, 4/6 animals were dead (PATTY (6th, 2012), SIDS (2009), ACGIH (7th, 2001)) and that an LC50 value (4 hours) was 4,000-8,000 ppm (SIDS (2009)), it was classified in Category 4. Besides, since the LC50 values were lower than 90% of the saturated vapor concentration (47,236 ppm), the reference value in units of ppm was applied as a vapour without a mist. New information sources (PATTY (6th, 2012), SIDS (2009)) were added, and the category was revised.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There are 2 reports of non-occlusive application of this substance to rabbits for 24 hours, in which although irritation was not observed in one test, erythema and necrosis were observed in the other study (SIDS (2009)). In addition, there are reports that slight irritation was observed after application to abraded skin in another test with rats (application time unknown) (SIDS (2009)), and that after occlusive application of this substance to the skin of guinea pigs, slight erythema was observed but it was reversible (SIDS (2009)). From the above, since there was no report on 4-hour application and the degrees of irritation of obtained information varied, all of them were considered inadequate to determine the category. Due to the addition of new information in List 1, the category was changed.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2B
-
Warning
H320 P305+P351+P338
P337+P313
P264
It is reported that in a test with rabbits, since reversible cornea damage was observed, and the degree of irritation was Grade 2 (1-10), it was slightly irritating (SIDS (2009)). In addition, irritation to the eyes was also reported in cases in humans (HSDB (Access on September 2014)). From the above results, it was classified in Category 2B. Besides, this substance was classified in "Xi; R 36" in the EU DSD classification, and in "Eye Irrit. 2 H319" in the EU CLP classification.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There were no in vivo data. As for in vitro, it was negative in a bacterial reverse mutation test (SIDS (2009)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation, narcotic effects)

This substance was irritating to the respiratory tract (SIDS (2009), ACGIH (7th, 2001), PATTY (6th, 2012), HSDB (Access on September 2014)). In humans, there was a report of weakness, drowsiness and unconsciousness at high concentrations (HSDB (Access on September 2014)). As for experimental animals, there is a description of narcotic effects (OEL Documentations (Japan Society For Occupational Health (JSOH), 1970), ACGIH (7th, 2001), PATTY (6th, 2012)), and there was a report of being inactive and central nervous system depression in an inhalation exposure to rats at 16.7 mg/L (SIDS (2009)).
From the above, this substance was considered to have respiratory tract irritation and narcotic effects, therefore, it was classified in Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation, narcotic effects).
Besides, in the previous classification, Category 1 (central nervous system) and Category 2 (liver) were adopted, but the effects on the central nervous system were determined as narcotic effects. In addition, there was no report about the liver in List 1 and List 2, and HSFS was not adopted for classification because it was included in List 3.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, although there were descriptions of an inhalation test with rats exposed to the vapour of n-propyl alcohol, a hydrolysate of this substance (SIDS (2009)), and an inhalation test with cats exposed to this substance (IUCLID (2000)), the exposure periods were as short as 5 or 9 days, therefore, the data were not applicable for classification.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.

Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 3
-
-
H402 P273
P501
It was classified in Category 3 from 96-hour LC50 = 60 mg/L for fish (Pimephales promelas) (SIDS, 2009).
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Not classified
-
-
- - If chronic toxicity data are used, then it is classified as "Not classified" due to rapid degradability (a 14-day degradation rate by BOD: 81% (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration Results of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 2000)), and 72-hour NOEC = 83.2 mg/L for algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) (SIDS, 2009).
If acute toxicity data are used for a trophic level for which chronic toxicity data are not obtained, then it is classified as "Not classified" due to rapid degradability (a 14-day degradation rate by BOD: 81% (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration Results of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 2000)), and a low bioaccumulation estimate (log Kow = 1.24 (PHYSPROP Database, 2009)) despite 96-hour LC50 = 60 mg/L for fish (Pimephales promelas) (SIDS, 2009).
From the above results, it was classified as "Not classified."
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible
-
-
- - This substance is not listed in the Annexes to the Montreal Protocol.
