Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Category 4

Warning
H302 P301+P312
P264
P270
P330
P501
From a reported LD50 value of 1,190 mg/kg for rats (DFGOT vol.23 (2007), ATSDR (2005)), it was classified in Category 4.
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Classification not possible
-
-
- - Due to lack of data, the classification is not possible.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable
-
-
- - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Not applicable
-
-
- - "Solids" according to GHS definition.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible
-
-
- - Due to lack of data, the classification is not possible.
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Classification not possible
-
-
- - The classification is not possible due to lack of data. Besides, it is reported that in a patch test in 853 workers, as a result of application of this substance (5 to 20%), 2% subjects showed irritant pustular reactions (DFGOT vol. 23 (2007)).
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2B
-
Warning
H320 P305+P351+P338
P337+P313
P264
It is reported that in an eye irritation test using rabbits, as a result of application of 100 mg this substance, slight conjunctival irritation was observed (ATSDR (2005), PATTY (6th, 2012)). From the above, it was classified in Category 2B.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Due to lack of data, the classification is not possible.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - The classification is not possible due to lack of data. Besides, it is reported that in a patch test in 853 workers, as a result of application of this substance (5 to 20%), sensitization was not observed (DFGOT vol. 23 (2007)), and that sensitization was found in 3 out of 20 animals in a maximization test using guinea pigs (DFGOT vol. 23 (2007)).
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - As data on a dihydrate of this substance, not this substance, as for in vivo, both micronucleus tests using rat and mouse erythrocytes were negative (ATSDR Addendum (2015)), and a comet assay using mouse bone marrow cells was positive (ATSDR Addendum (2015)).
As for in vitro, for a dihydrate of this substance, a bacterial reverse mutation test was negative, and for this substance, there are positive and negative data in chromosomal aberration tests using human lymphocytes, a sister chromatid exchange test was negative, and a chromosomal aberration test using cultured mammalian cells was negative (ATSDR (2005), ATSDR Addendum (2015)). From the above, this substance was classified as "Classification not possible" in accordance with the Guidance.
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - No carcinogenicity information in humans. As for experimental animals, it is written that rats or mice were dosed with this substance in drinking water at a 5 ppm concentration as tungsten for 540 days, an increased incidence of tumors was not observed (DFGOT vol. 23 (2007)). On the other hand, it is written that in a test in which female rats were intravenously injected 50 mg N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (NMU) after 14-day administration of a tungsten compound (not specified) containing 150 ppm tungsten, an increased incidence of breast cancer and shortened time up to occurrence of breast cancer were shown 125 days after NMU injection in tungsten administered groups (DFGOT vol. 23 (2007), ATSDR (2005)). From the above test results, a conclusion cannot be drawn on the carcinogenicity of this substance, and there is no classification result by other organizations. Therefore, the substance was classified as "Classification not possible" for this hazard class due to lack of data.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - There is no information on human reproductive effects. As for experimental animals, in a test in which male rats were mated with untreated female rats after 55-day gavage administration of this substance at 50 mg/kg/day, effects on fertility, sex hormone, and sexual organ weights were not observed (ATSDR Addendum (2015)). However, it is written that in a test in which male rats were mated with untreated female rats after 3-month diet administration of this substance corresponding to 275 mg/kg/day, increased density and function of testis Leydig cells and increased levels of serum testosterone, LH, and FSH were found (ATSDR Addendum (2015)). On the other hand, it is written that also in a test in which female rats were mated with untreated male rats after 3-month diet administration of this substance corresponding to 275 mg/kg/day, an increased serum FSH level and a decreased serum progesterone level were observed (ATSDR Addendum (2015)). Besides, as a result of gavage administration of this substance in male and female rats for 70 days before mating and through mating and gestation until day 20 of nursing, an extension of a gestational period was found at 125 mg/kg/day of high dose. However, in a similar test using mice, effects on fertility and sexual function were not observed (ATSDR Addendum (2015)). Besides these, it is reported that in a test in which female rats were administered a tungsten compound (not specified) in the diet for maximum eight months including pre-pregnancy and pregnancy periods and had a Caesarean section on day 20 of gestation and fetuses were observed, fetal toxicity and delayed ossification were found. However, there is the remark that details are unknown due to the insufficient description (ATSDR (2005), DFGOT vol. 23 (2007)).
As above, although variations of sex hormone levels occurred in both males and females in a test to assess reproductive effects in rats in the administration of this substance in an oral route, specific changes in sexual function and toxic effects on fertility were not shown. However, there is not enough test result using pregnant animals to assess developmental effects. Therefore, the substance was classified as "Classification not possible" for this hazard class due to lack of data.
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - There are no human data on this substance. As for experimental animals, anorexia, incoordination, and dyspnea were described in oral administration in guinea pigs (ACGIH (7th, 2001), DFGOT vol. 23 (2007)). However, the classification cannot be given due to unknown details on doses and so on. From the above, the classification is not possible due to lack of data.
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - Due to lack of data, the classification is not possible.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible
-
-
- - Due to lack of data, the classification is not possible.
