Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified
-
-
- - Based on a report of an LD50 value of >3,200 mg/kg (PATTY (6th, 2012), SIDS (2005)) for rats, this substance was classified as "Not classified."
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified
-
-
- - Based on a report of an LD50 value of > 20 mL/kg (18,900 mg/kg) (PATTY (6th, 2012)) for guinea pigs, this substance was classified as "Not classified."
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable
-
-
- - Liquid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Not classified
-
-
- - Based on a report of an LC50 value of > 5.3 mg/L (converted 4-hour equivalent value: > 7.95 mg/L) (HSDB (Access on August 2017)) in a 6-hour inhalation exposure test with rats, this substance was classified as "Not classified." Besides, the reference values in the unit of mg/L was applied as mist because the exposure concentration was higher than the saturated vapor pressure concentration (11.2 ppm (0.131 mg/L)).
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Not classified
-
-
- - There is a description that in a skin irritation test (occluded application) with guinea pigs, this substance showed slight irritation (SIDS (2005), PATTY (6th, 2012)). Also, there is a description that slight irritation was observed when it was applied openly to the skin of guinea pigs, and the irritation was more intensified when applied in an occlusive manner (HSDB (Access on August 2017)). Therefore, this substance was classified as "Not classified" (Category 3 in UN GHS classification) corresponding to slight irritation.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Not classified
-
-
- - It is described that in an eye irritation test (OECD TG 405-compliant) with rabbits, slight redness was produced 1 hour after application of this substance, but it resolved after 24 hours, and no other irritancy (cornea, iris, conjunctival edema) was observed, so it was not an eye irritant (ECHA registered information (Access on December 2017)). Therefore, this substance was classified as "Not classified."
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There is a description that there is a relation between water-based paints containing this substance and asthma or asthma-like symptoms (PATTY (6th, 2012)).
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, there is a description that when 1% of this substance was applied to 203 volunteers in a semi-occlusive manner for three consecutive weeks and challenged two weeks later, slight redness was observed in three of them, but the reaction with this substance was low, so did not elicit evidence of sensitization (ECHA registered information (Access on December 2017), HSDB (Access on August 2017)).
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There was no in vivo data. As for in vitro, a bacterial reverse mutation test and a mammalian cell chromosome aberration test were negative (JECDB (Access on September 2017), PATTY (6th, 2012), SIDS (2005)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
7 Reproductive toxicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - In a combined repeated dose toxicity study with the reproduction/developmental toxicity screening test (OECD TG 422) with rats, effects on parental animal fertility and on pups were not observed at up to 750 mg/kg/day where effects on the kidney in the paternal animals and an increase in the liver weights in the maternal animals were observed (JECDB (Access on August 2017), SIDS (2005), PATTY (6th, 2012)). However, it is difficult to classify it as "Not classified" based on only this result since this test is a screening test. In addition, there is no other available data for classification. Therefore, it was classified as "Classification not possible."
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There was no single-exposure information on this substance in humans. As for experimental animals, there is a report that in a 6-hour single inhalation exposure test with rats, there were no deaths and only vasodilation was observed at 5.3 mg/L (452 ppm) (converted 4-hour equivalent value: 7.95 mg/L) (PATTY (6th, 2012)). However, the target organs cannot be specified based on only this piece of information. Because there was no other information, this substance was classified as "Classification not possible."
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - As for experimental animals, in a combined repeated dose toxicity study with the reproduction/developmental toxicity screening test (OECD TG 422) with rats dosed by gavage, an increase in creatinine and total bilirubin, an increase in liver weights, and basophilic change of the renal tubular epithelium and hyaline droplet degeneration in the kidney were reported at or over 150 mg/kg/day (converted guidance value: 73 mg/kg/day (males)), which is within the guidance value range of Category 2 (SIDS (2005), JECDB (Access on August 2017)). Other than this, in a 103-week test with rats dosed by feeding, and a 90-day test with dogs dosed by feeding, no adverse effects were observed within the guidance value range of Category 2 (PATTY (6th, 2012)).
Among the above, the effects on the kidney in a combined repeated dose toxicity study with the reproduction/developmental toxicity screening test were considered to be a finding specific to male rats. Therefore, this substance was classified as "Classification not possible" because it corresponds to "Not Classified" in the oral route, but there was no information on effects in other routes.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.

Rationale for the classification
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Acute) Category 2
-
-
H401 P273
P501
From 72-hour EC50 (biomass) = 8.0 mg/L for algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) (OECD SIDS: 1995), it was classified in Category 2.
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Category 3
-
-
H412 P273
P501
If chronic toxicity data are used, then it is classified as "Not classified" due to being not rapidly degradable (non-biodegradable, a degradation rate by BOD: 5, 82, 4% (J-CHECK, 1986)), and 21-day NOEC (reproduction inhibition) = 3.2 mg/L for crustacea (Daphnia magna) (OECD SIDS: 1995).
If acute toxicity data are used for a trophic level for which chronic toxicity data are not obtained, then it is classified in Category 3 due to being not rapidly degradable (non-biodegradable, a degradation rate by BOD: 5, 82, 4% (J-CHECK, 1986)), and 96-hour LC50 = 18 mg/L for fish (Oryzias latipes) (OECD SIDS: 1995).
By drawing a comparison between the above results, it was classified in Category 3.
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available.
