Rationale for the classification
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified
-
-
- - There were reports of LD50 values of > 2,000 mg/kg for rats (EPA Guideline No. 870.1100-compliant) (EPA Pesticide (2005)) and 1,830 mg/kg (HSDB (Access on August 2017)), one item corresponds to "Not classified," and another one corresponds to Category 4. By adopting the information in the EPA Pesticide of the test compliant with the guideline, and it was classified as "Not classified."
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Category 4

Based on a report of an LD50 value of 2,000 mg/kg for rabbits (HSDB (Access on August 2017)), it was classified in Category 4.
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not applicable
-
-
- - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Not applicable
-
-
- - Solid (GHS definition)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible

Based on descriptions that this substance was corrosive to the skin (EPA Pesticide (2005)), and that this substance was an irritant of Category I (HSDB (Access on August 2017)), it was classified in Category 1.
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 1

Danger
H318 P305+P351+P338
P280
P310
This substance was classified in Category 1 for skin corrosion/irritation. There is a description that pain, conjunctivitis, blurring vision and acute inflammation occurred in the accidental exposure to this substance in human eyes (EPA Pesticide (2005)). It is described that in eye irritation tests with rabbits, the evaluation value was maximal 10 (maximum value 10) 24 hours after application, and that this substance is irritating to the eyes (animal species unknown) (HSDB (Access on August 2017)). Therefore, it was classified in Category 1.
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
4 Skin sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data. There is no in vivo data, and as for in vitro, there is a report that a bacterial reverse mutation test was negative (NTP DB (Access on August 2017)).
6 Carcinogenicity Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.

In a developmental toxicity study with pregnant rats dosed by gavage, at or above 200 mg/kg/day, general effects such as a decrease in weight gain and a decrease in food consumption were observed in maternal animals; at 500 mg/kg/day, decreased fetal weight and skeletal malformations (bent ribs) were observed in fetuses (EPA Pesticide (2005), HSDB (Access on August 2017)). Additionally, it is described that this substance shows an estrogenic effect (EPA Pesticide (2005)). From the above, the substance was classified in Category 2 because it causes morphological defects in the fetal skeletons at the dose with general toxicity in maternal animals, and it has endocrine disruptor capabilities.

As for humans, as the effects of inhalation exposure to end-use products containing this substance, the irritation-related symptoms such as irritation of the mouth/throat/nose, coughing/choking and shortness of breath and neurological effects such as dizziness, headache and blurred vision were reported though there is no information on the original source, and the details such as the frequency of exposures are unknown. (EPA Pesticide (2005), HSDB (Access on August 2017)). Therefore, it was classified in Category 1 (nervous system), Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation).
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - As for humans, most of accidents are related to irritation reactions, but also neurological effects such as dizziness, headache, and vision disorders were reported (EPA Pesticide (2005), HSDB (Access on August 2017)).
As for experimental animals, it is reported that in a 13-week dermal application test (6 hours/day, 5 days/week) with rats, no systematic effect was observed; as local effects, skin irritation (erythema, desquamation, eschar formation), acanthosis, acute or chronic dermatitis and inflammatory exudate on the epidermal surface at or above 10 mg/kg/day, and ulcers, etc. at 25 mg/kg/day were observed (HSDB (Access on August 2017)).
As a result of consideration of the effects on the nervous system in humans, it was judged that the effects were due to a single exposure, and it was not adopted in repeated exposure.
From the above, it was classified as "Classification not possible" due to lack of data.
10 Aspiration hazard Classification not possible
-
-
- - Classification not possible due to lack of data.

From 96-hour LC50 = 1.6 mg/L for fish (Cyprinus carpio) (NLM HSDB: 2010, EPA AQUIRE: 2017, Gimeno, S., H. et al. (1998)), it was classified in Category 2.
11 Hazardous to the aquatic environment (Long-term) Category 1

Warning

If chronic toxicity data are used, then it is classified in Category 1 due to being not rapidly degradable (non-biodegradable, average degradation rate by BOD: 0% (J-CHECK, 2013)), and 30-day NOEC (sexual maturation) = 0.0566 mg/L for fish (Pimephales promelas) (EPA AQUIRE: 2017, Panter, G. H. et al. (2006)).
If acute toxicity data are used for a trophic level for which chronic toxicity data are not obtained, then it is classified in Category 2 due to being not rapidly degradable (non-biodegradable, average degradation rate by BOD: 0% (J-CHECK, 2013)), and 96-hour LC50 = 1.7 mg/L for crustacea (Crangon septemspinosa) (NLM HSDB: 2010, EPA AQUIRE: 2017).
By drawing a comparison between the above results, it was classified in Category 1.
12 Hazardous to the ozone layer Classification not possible
