This substance is strongly acidic substance. There is no specific report, but it is written that it is corrosive to human skin and causes redness and blisters (CICAD 72 (2009)), and it is written that it causes severe irritation and necrosis in contact with human skin (HSDB (Access on July 2015)). Besides, it is classified in "Skin. Corr. 1A H314" in EU CLP classification (ECHA CL Inventory (Access on June 2015)). From the above, it was classified in Category 1. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |

Besides, this substance was classified in Category 1 for skin corrosion/irritation. From the above, it was classified in Category 1. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |

8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Category 1 (respiratory organs) |
Danger |
H370 | P308+P311 P260 P264 P270 P321 P405 P501 |
This substance is strongly irritating to the respiratory tract (HSDB (Access on June 2015)), and a headache and lung damage (effects on respiratory organs such as pulmonary and laryngeal edema) were reported in inhalation exposure in humans (PATTY (6th, 2012), HSDB (Access on June 2015)). There are no data in experimental animals. From the above, because this substance has effects on respiratory organs, it was classified in Category 1 (respiratory organs). By adding new information, the previous classification was revised. |
FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Category 1 (skin, thyroid, respiratory organs, systemic) |
Danger |
H372 | P260 P264 P270 P314 P501 |
As for humans, chronic exposure to this substance causes injury to the kidney and spleen, hypotension, palpitation, ataxia, and weakness, and may cause lung damage. Moreover, it is written that long-term exposure to hydriodic acid, an aqueous solution of this substance causes skin rash, a headache, irritation to the nasal mucosa (HSDB (Access on June 2015)). For these findings, information is insufficient as repeated exposure to this substance, but because this substance is strongly acidic substance, and as acute toxicity, effects on the respiratory organs by irritation were reported, it is estimated that it occurs in repeated exposure as well. On the other hand, because there is no similar report for injury to the kidney and spleen, only the respiratory system was taken as a target organ. Although it is not this substance, but as iodine poisoning, other than iodine eruption and thyroid lesions, laryngitis, bronchitis, glottal edema, asthmatic attack, salivary gland edema, parotitis, gastritis, along with iodine cachexia such as generalized weakness, palpitation, depression, sleeplessness, and irritability are listed (Ethical Pharmaceuticals 2016 (2015)). As above, other than skin, thyroid, and respiratory organs, various systemic signs for which it is difficult to identify a target organ were observed, and iodine poisoning is thought to be the effect common to water-soluble iodine compounds. Therefore, the substance was classified in Category 1 (skin, thyroid, respiratory organs, systemic toxicity). |
