1 | Acute toxicity (Oral) | Category 3 |
Danger |
H301 | P301+P310 P264 P270 P321 P330 P405 P501 |
Among documented rat LD50 values of 373mg/kg (PATTY (5th, 2001)), 200mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)), 240mg/kg (ca.) (HSDB (2003)), and 500mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)), the value representing the highest hazard was used as the basis to classify the substance into Category 3. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
1 | Acute toxicity (Dermal) | Category 3 |
Danger |
H311 | P302+P352 P361+P364 P280 P312 P321 P405 P501 |
Based on the rabbit LD50 of 316mg/kg (PATTY (5th, 2001)) and 200-316mg/kg (HSDB (2003)), the substance was classified into Category 3. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

1 | Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) | Category 4 |
Warning |
H332 | P304+P340 P261 P271 P312 |
Based on the rat LD50 of > 1.4mg/L in 6-hour tests (4-hour conversion LC50: 2.1mg/kg), (IUCLID (2000)), the substance was classified into Category 4. Because its toxic concentration is higher than 90% (40 ppmV) of saturated vapour pressure concentration (188.7 ppmV), we judged that the substance was mist. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
2 | Skin corrosion/irritation | Category 1 |
Danger |
H314 | P301+P330+P331 P303+P361+P353 P305+P351+P338 P304+P340 P260 P264 P280 P310 P321 P363 P405 P501 |
In primary skin irritation tests, the substance was topically applied onto 6 rabbits for 24 hours, and during the 21-day observation, the average scores of the Primary Dermal Irritation Index after 24-72 hours indicated that the substance was corrosive (HSDB (2003)). Other tests also reported that the substance was highly corrosive (IUCLID (2000)) or causes immediate necrosis (IUCLID (2000)). Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
3 | Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Category 1 |
Danger |
H318 | P305+P351+P338 P280 P310 |
Its preexisting classification for skin corrosion is Category 1. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Classification not possible |

- | - | No in vivo data are available and thus classification is not possible. Among in vitro mutagenicity tests, negative results were documented from both chromosomal aberration tests using cultured mammalian cells and gene mutation tests using microorganisms. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |

7 | Reproductive toxicity | Category 2 |
Warning |
H361 | P308+P313 P201 P202 P280 P405 P501 |
In oral administration tests, rats were administered at 80mg/kg, a dose that induces general toxicity such as decreased body weight gain and decreased food consumption in parental rats (both sexes). This administration resulted in severely decreased survival rates in neonates, unkempt fur and neglected brood collection during nurturing periods (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council)), (accessed June 2008). From these results, the substance was classified into Category 2. Although 2 of the 12 treated female rats died after 21-22 days of gestation, the dose that induced developmental toxicity (80mg/kg) was lower than the rat oral LD50 values (200mg/kg (IUCLID (2000)) and 240mg/kg (ca.) (HSDB (2003)). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Category 2 (nervous system) |
Warning |
H373 | P260 P314 P501 |
In 28-day repeated oral administration tests, rats administered at 70mg/kg showed salivation and convulsions under normal conditions, suggesting that the substance has toxicological effects on the autonomic nervous system. The no-observed effect level has been documented to be 20mg/kg for both sexes (Toxicity Testing Reports of Environmental Chemicals (Chemicals Investigation Promoting Council) (2008)). Since the 90-day conversion of the NOEL 20mg/kg is 64mg/kg, which is equivalent to Category 2 guidance values, the substance was classified into Category 2 (nervous system). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment Short term (Acute) | Category 2 |
- |
H401 | P273 P501 |
It was classified in Category 2 from 48-hour EC50 (immobile) = 8.0 mg/L for crustacea (Daphnia magna) (Results of Aquatic Toxicity Tests of Chemicals conducted by Ministry of the Environment in Japan (Ministry of the Environment, 2018), Environmental Risk Assessment for Chemical Substances Vol. 14 (Ministry of the Environment, 2016)). | FY2018 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment Long term (Chronic) | Category 2 |
- |
H411 | P273 P391 P501 |
If chronic toxicity data are used, then it is classified in Category 2 due to rapid degradability (readily biodegradable, a degradation rate by BOD: 76.9% (J-CHECK, 1976)), 72-hour NOEC (growth rate) = 0.016 mg/L for algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) (OECD SIDS: 2006, Environmental Risk Assessment for Chemical Substances Vol. 14 (Ministry of the Environment, 2016)), and 21-day NOEC (reproduction inhibition) = 0.016 mg/L for crustacea (Daphnia magna) (OECD SIDS: 2006). If acute toxicity data are used for a trophic level for which chronic toxicity data are not obtained, then it is classified in Category 3 due to rapid degradability (readily biodegradable, a degradation rate by BOD: 76.9% (J-CHECK, 1976)), and 96-hour LC50 = 12 mg/L for fish (Oryzias latipes) (Results of Aquatic Toxicity Tests of Chemicals conducted by Ministry of the Environment in Japan (Ministry of the Environment, 2018), Environmental Risk Assessment for Chemical Substances Vol. 14 (Ministry of the Environment, 2016), OECD SIDS: 2018). From the above results, it was classified in Category 2. |
