 Chromium and its compounds are designated as Group 2 of airway sensitizer (Recommendation of Occupational Exposure Limits vol. 58 (Japan Society For Occupational Health, 2016)). This corresponds to Category 1A according to the GHS classification guidance for the Japanese Government.
 According to the GHS classification guidance for the Japanese Government (2013 revised edition), however, in the above recommendation, chromium and chromium compounds were newly designated as Group 2 for Respiratory Sensitization as a substance which sensitization has not clarified yet through epidemiologic research, based on the classification standard for sensitization (provisional, May 26, 2010), thus, it was judged as inappropriate to classify this substance in Category 1A. Therefore, the substance was classified in Category 1B.

 Chromium and its compounds are designated as Group 1 of skin sensitizer (Recommendation of Occupational Exposure Limits vol. 58 (Japan Society For Occupational Health, 2016)). Moreover, although details on test method, etc. are unknown, in a skin sensitization test using guinea pigs, skin reaction was observed and positive result was reported (CICAD 76 (2009)).

 Besides, in a 7-week repeated dose toxicity study using mice given by feeding, it is reported that a significant decrease in spermatogonia and significant increase in pachytene stage cells in testis and a decrease in epididymal sperm count were observed in the group of 0.01% or above (converted guidance value: 8.2 mg/kg/day). Also, it is reported that an increase in the incidence of sperm morphological abnormality was observed in the group of 0.04% or above (converted guidance value: 33 mg/kg/day) (Environmental Risk Assessment for Chemical Substances vol. 8 (Ministry of the Environment, 2010)). However, in this report, it is pointed out that the description of the study method is insufficient and that the chromium compounds used for this study are unclear (Environmental Risk Assessment for Chemical Substances vol. 8 (Ministry of the Environment, 2010)).
