1 | Acute toxicity (Oral) | Not classified |
- |
- | - | Based on the rat LD50 value of 2250 mg/kg (CICAD 77 (2010)), the substance was classified as "Not classified" in the JIS classification (corresponding to Category 5 in the UN-GHS classification). | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
1 | Acute toxicity (Dermal) | Classification not possible |

5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Category 2 |
Warning |
H341 | P308+P313 P201 P202 P280 P405 P501 |
The classification was concluded as Category 2 based on the positive results in the chromosome aberration test using bone marrow obtained from mice orally administered (in vivo mutagenicity test in somatic cells) (ATSDR (2004)). As relevant information, as for in vitro mutagenicity study, negative results in the chromosome aberration test using Chinese hamster oocytes were reported (CICAD 77 (2010)). | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Insufficient data were available. As relevant information, in the 3-year oral administration study via drinking water in male rats, which had some interpretative limitation for carcinogenicity, no tumors in relation to administration were reported (CICAD 77 (2010)). | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | In the three-generation oral administration study via drinking water using rats, no effects on reproduction were observed (CICAD 77 (2010)). However, the available information was inadequate to evaluate the effects on fertility (CICAD 77 (2010)). Therefore, the substance was classified as "Classification not possible" due to lack of data. | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | In various feeding or drinking studies in rats or mice, the principal findings were the effects on the bones which consisted of stimulation of bone mineralization, excessive osteoid thickness associated with inhibition of the rate of calcification, growth inhibition, irregularly hypertrophy of the epiphyseal growth plate, inhibition of calcification and absorption in metaphysis (IRIS (2002)). These were the findings at the higher dose level beyond the guidance values. In the 9-week drinking study in rats, the NOAEL of 525 mg/kg/day as strontium (converted dose level as that of 90-day study as strontium dichloride: 658 mg/kg/day) was reported (IRIS (2002)). And no histopathological effects were noted up to the dose level over the range of the guidance values (145 mg/kg/day as strontium dichloride) in the 3-month drinking study in rats (IRIS (2002)). Consequently, "Not classified" category was applicable for oral route, however, the classification for specific target organ toxicity (repeated exposure) was determined as "Classification not possible" due to unknown effects in the other routes (no data were available). | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
