1 | Acute toxicity (Oral) | Not classified |
- |
- | - | Based on its rat LD50 = 2.34 g/kg (PATTY (5th, 2001)), the substance was classified into "Not classified" using JIS classification criteria (equivalent to Category 5 in UN classification). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
1 | Acute toxicity (Dermal) | Category 4 |

The classification is based on the results of "being corrosive" after application to skin of rabbits for 1 - 4 hours (IUCLID (2000)). As relevant notes, its pH is 13.4 (100 mL/L) (IUCLID (2000)), and it is rated C;R34 in EU classification (EU-Annex 1 (accessed August 2008)). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
3 | Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Category 1 |
Danger |
H318 | P305+P351+P338 P280 P310 |
It was rated Grade 9 (Grade scale, 1 - 10) in an eye irritation test using rabbits (PATTY (5th, 2001)), and other data shows it is corrosive to skin (IUCLID (2000)). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
4 | Respiratory sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
4 | Skin sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | A skin sensitization test using guinea pigs (Maximization test) indicated that it may induce allergic contact dermatitis (HSDB (2006)). However, its positive rate was not provided, and it was not concluded to be sensitization-positive. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Since there is no available in vivo test data, classification is not possible. As relevant information, results of Ames tests were negative (NTP DB (accessed August 2008)). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | In a developmental toxicity test in which rats were exposed via inhalation during the organogenetic period, there were no adverse effects on the development of offspring, including teratogenicity effects, except for increase in skeletal mutation (IUCLID (2000)). However, the test did not provide data on fertility or sexual functions of parental animals, and thus, the substance was classified into "Classification not possible". | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Category 1 (testis) |
Danger |
H372 | P260 P264 P270 P314 P501 |
By orally exposing rats at 400 mg/kg/day (90-day conversion: approximately 142 mg/kg/day) for 32 days, significant increase of weights of some organs, slight changes in blood test values, and slight histological changes in the liver and the testicles were detected (IUCLID (2000)). After exposure via inhalation at 0.005 - 0.03 mg/L/24h (0.01 - 0.06 mg/L/6h/day) for 90 days, no effect was observed in rats and mice, while in a test in which dogs were exposed via inhalation for 90 days (doses: 0.005, 0.03 mg/L/24h (0.02, 0.12 mg/L/6h/day)), dose-dependent atrophy of the seminiferous tubules and weight reduction of the testicles at the dose of 0.12 mg/L/6h/day were observed, and so were effects on the testicles at the dose equivalent to the guidance value of Category 1 (IUCLID (2000)). Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1 (testis). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment Short term (Acute) | Category 3 |
- |
H402 | P273 P501 |
It was classified in Category 3 from 72-hour EC50 (growth rate) = 28.1 mg/L for algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) (OECD SIDS: 2013). | FY2018 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment Long term (Chronic) | Category 3 |
- |
H412 | P273 P501 |
If chronic toxicity data are used, it was classified as "Not classified" due to rapid degradability (readily biodegradable, an average degradation rate by BOD: 68% (J-CHECK, 2001)), and 72-hour NOEC (biomass) = 3.13 mg/L for algae (Desmodesmus subspicatus) (OECD SIDS: 2013). If acute toxicity data are used for a trophic level for which chronic toxicity data are not obtained, then it is classified in Category 3 due to rapid degradability (readily biodegradable, an average degradation rate by BOD: 68% (J-CHECK, 2001)), and 48-hour LC50 = 33 mg/L for crustacea (Daphnia magna) (OECD SIDS: 2013). From the above results, it was classified in Category 3. |
