There are no data on this substance. However, on the basis of multiple descriptions of barium or barium compounds which show irritation to skin such as barium chlorate as an analog substance causes irritation to skin (HSDB (2002)), barium and soluble barium compounds have skin irritation (ACGIH (2001)), and barium causes mild skin irritation to rabbits (EHC107 (1990)), it was classified in Category 2. |

There are no data on this substance. But there is the information that barium ion is a muscle poison and the poisoning cases caused by barium compounds show gastrointestinal injuries followed by adverse myocardial stimulation (ACGIH (2001)). Furthermore, acute gastroenteritis and muscular paralysis caused by loss of deep reflexes are reported (EHC107 (1990)). Therefore, it was classified in Category 1 (muscle, heart, digestive system). Besides, salivation, nausea, diarrhoea, tachycardia, hypokalemia, twitching, flaccid paralysis of skeletal muscle, respiratory muscle paralysis, and ventricular fibrillation were reported as acute effects after oral administration in rats (EHC107 (1990)). Furthermore, there is the information that inhalation of barium chlorate as an analog substance causes irritation to a respiratory tract (HSDB (2002)), therefore, it was classified in Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation). |
