In oral and dermal applications of this substance to pregnant rats, malformations such as cardiac malformations, diaphragmatic hernias, and hydronephrosis were noted in pups that were born from exposed mothers at doses that did not show toxic effects in maternal animals (PDS 84 (1996)). In addition, hydrocephalus and microphthalmia were seen in progeny of mice that received oral administration of the substance during gestation (IARC 30 (1983)). Also, oral administration of the substance to pregnant rats was associated with increased fetal deaths and lowered postnatal survival rates. These reports demonstrated that clear cases of reproductive toxicity become apparent at doses that do not show maternal toxicity. Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1B.
