Although no test results on this substance are available, barium and soluble compounds are attributed to the stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract, myocardium, and other muscles (ACGIH (2001)). In addition, clinical features of barium poisoning include acute gastroenteritis and loss of deep reflexes with onset of skeletal muscular paralysis (EHC 107 (1990)). In animal experiments, the effects of barium ingestion include salivation, nausea, diarrhea, tachycardia, hypokalamia, twitching, flaccid paralysis of skeletal muscle, respiratory muscle paralysis, and ventricular fibrillation (EHC 107 (1990)). Based on these reports, the substance was classified into Category 1 (gastrointestinal tract, skeletal muscle, and heart). Although no test results on this substance are available, it is reported that repeated subcutaneous injections of barium chloride affected the central nervous system in rabbits, and repeated inhalation exposure induced interstitial pneumonitis in guinea pigs, rats, and hamsters (ACGIH (2001)). In addition, chronic exposure to barium compounds in drinking water or via inhalation affected the cardiac muscle and testes at doses that fall under Category 2 guidance values or higher doses (EHC 107 (1990)). Thus, the substance was classified into Category 2 (central nervous system, lung, heart, and testis).
