The link between exposure to this substance and bronchitis has been documented based on observations that workers who handled this substance at the polyurethane rubber producing plants suffered from conjunctival irritation in addition to acute disorder in the respiratory tracts. In addition, as a result of epidemiological studies on rubber production workers, the substance has been confirmed to be an irritant since exposure to it was associated with increased frequencies of eye irritation, coughing, and exertional dyspnea. Moreover, increased closing volume seen particularly in elderly workers in respiratory function tests is considered to be an indicator of respiratory tract irritation. Based on these human cases, the substance was classified into Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation). There is a case report in which a worker who handled polyurethane containing this substance repeatedly suffered from high fever and seizures accompanied with severe respiratory symptoms three times within a month, and died during seizures (IUCLID (2000)). However, this worker did not show any symptoms while handling the same material prior to the incident (IUCLID (2000)). In addition, because some workers (unidentified number) who handled materials containing this substance complained of bronchitis, an observational study was conducted for 1 year. This study indicated that there may be a positive relationship between isocyanate and thoracic disorder (IUCLID (2000)).
