Based on the classification of "Group 2A" in IARC (IARC suppl. 7 (1987)), the substance was classified into Category 1B. In animal tests, skin tumours (mainly papillomas) was observed when mice received topical application and simulated solar irradiation for 37 weeks (IARC vol. 40 (1986)) and squamous-cell carcinomas invading the dermis and cartilage was observed when mice received topical application plus UV (wavelengths <340 nm) irradiation for 23 weeks (IARC vol. 40 (1986)). Epidemiologically, it was reported that "keratomas" or "epitheliomas" of the skin were found in exposed workers in the bergamot oil (containing the substance as an ingredient) production industry.
