Its rat LD50 through dermal administration is 12 mg/kg (Patty 5th, 2001). Based on this report, the substance was classified into Category 1. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |

H330 | P304+P340 P403+P233 P260 P271 P284 P310 P320 P405 P501 |
Its mouse LC50 through 30-minute inhalation exposure is 1500 mg/m3 (Patty 5th, 2001). The 30-minute LC50 value was converted to 4-hour LC50 value using the following equation: LC50 (4 hours) = 1500*sqrt (0.5) / sqrt (4) = 530 mg/m3. Moreover, with the use of the conversion factor: 1 mg/m3 = 0.1567 ppm (at 25degC), LC50 (4 hours) = 83.1 ppm. Its saturated vapour pressure at 25degC = 65.1 mmHG*133.3 = 8677.8 Pa = 8.677 kPa and its saturated vapour pressure concentration (25degC) = 85,911 ppm. Because the LC50 value, 83.1 ppm, is lower than 90% of the saturated vapour pressure concentration, the experiment was conducted presumably in a vapour with almost no included mists. Thus, using ppm-based concentration criteria, the substance was classified into Category 1. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |

It brings about a strong vesicant action on the skin and is corrosive (Patty 5th, 2001). As refined categorization is difficult, we determined that the substance is classified between Category 1A and 1C. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |
3 | Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Category 1 |
Danger |
H318 | P305+P351+P338 P280 P310 |
Since it damages the deeper ocular structures (Patty 5th, 2001), we determined the substance to be corrosive and classified it into Category 1. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |

5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Category 1B |
Danger |
H340 | P308+P313 P201 P202 P280 P405 P501 |
According to IARC 9 (1975) and S7 (1987), it induces dominant lethal mutations in mice and micronuclei in bone-marrow cells of mice. Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1B. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |

Danger |
H350 | P308+P313 P201 P202 P280 P405 P501 |
According to IARC S7 (1987), this substance is rated as Group 2A. Hence, it was classified into Category 1B. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. As additional background information, IARC 9 (1975) documented that intravenous injection of this substance to pregnant rats on the 4th day of pregnancy resulted in signs of fetal toxicity being observed. However, since the administration route used in this study is not a conventional route and concentrations of the substance administered are not mentioned. As such, the report was not considered for classification. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Category 2 (blood system, respiratory organs) |
Warning |
H371 | P308+P311 P260 P264 P270 P405 P501 |
Evaluating the following descriptions comprehensively, the substance was classified into Category 2 (blood system and respiratory system): people who made a contact with this substance developed bone marrow degeneration within 12 hours, which progressed to severe aplasia. These people also experienced a moderate anemia accompanied with lymphopenia, granulocytopenia, and thrombocytopenia (HSDB, 2004); this substance causes respiratory tract injury (HSDB, 2004); inhaling nitrogen mustard can irritate the nose and throat (HSFS, 1998); and this substance may be corrosive to the skin and eyes (Patty 5th, 2001). | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |
