From Carcinogenicity Studies (Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare) (2002), there is a result that "In a 2-year oral (in drinking water) carcinogenicity test of free-base quinoline, incidences of hepatocellular adenoma and hepatocellular carcinoma and hemangiosarcoma of the liver were significantly increased in male and female rats and rare nasal cavity tumors such as sarcoma and neuroepithelioma in males and sarcoma in females were caused, which was considered to be clear evidence of carcinogenicity in male and female F344/DuCrj (Fischer) rats. For mice, hemangioma and hemangiosarcoma were observed in many male and female animals in all treated group, and incidences of histiocytic sarcoma and hepatocellular carcinoma of the liver and renal cell carcinoma of the kidney were significantly increased in male rats and incidence of histiocytic sarcoma of the liver was significantly increased in female rats, which was considered to be clear evidence of carcinogenicity of quinoline for Crj:BDF1 mice." In addition, there is a result of another rat oral carcinogenicity test where mortality was increased owing to early rupture of tumors (IRIS (2006)). There is sufficient evidence to demonstrate animal carcinogenicity (presumed human carcinogen), therefore the substance was classified into Category 1B. Quinoline was classified into "Group B2" in EPA (IRIS (2006)), and "2";R45 in EU classification. | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
