Of documented rat LD50 values for the rat of 140mg/kg (EHC 93 (1989)) and 360mg/kg (EHC 93 (1989)), the lower value of the two was used for the basis to classify the substance into Category 3. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

H311 | P302+P352 P361+P364 P280 P312 P321 P405 P501 |
Of documented rabbit LD50 of 250mg/kg (PATTY 5th (2001)) and rat LD50 of > 2000mg/kg, the lower value of the two was used for the basis to classify the substance into Category 3. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Although the substance has been classified into Group 2B by IARC (1972), based on exposure to polychlorinated phenol group complex, the substance was classified into "Classification not possible" due to lack of an assessment on single substance. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | In the tests in which pregnant rats were exposed to the substance of purified and commercial grades during the organogenetic period, there were no adverse effects on the development of the offspring observed except for delayed ossification at high dosages as the only abnormality seen in fetuses (IRIS (2002 and 1986)). However, classification is not possible due to insufficient data being available on the sexual function and fertility of parental animals. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Category 2 (liver) |
Warning |
H373 | P260 P314 P501 |
In the 90-day repeated ingestion studies with rats, abnormalities were observed in liver function test values: increased liver weight and centrilobular hepatocyte hypertrophy at doses of 100mg/kg/day or higher, increased BUN and GPT values at 100 or 200mg/kg/day, etc. Furthermore, in the repeated dose studies in which rats were administered with 10-100mg/kg/day for 55 days, histological changes were observed only in the liver, implying specific effects on the liver. As such, repeated oral administration of 100mg/kg/day for 90 days is in accordance with the range of Category 2 guidance values, and thus, the substance was classified into Category 2 (liver). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment Short term (Acute) | Category 1 |
Warning |
H400 | P273 P391 P501 |
Since 90-hour LC50 for fish (medaka) is 0.56mg/L (Test for the Ecological Effect of Chemical Substances (Ministry of the Environment), 2000), the substance was classified into Category 1. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
11 | Hazardous to the aquatic environment Long term (Chronic) | Category 1 |
Warning |
H410 | P273 P391 P501 |
The substance was classified into Category 1 since its classification for acute toxicity is Category 1 and it is not rapidly degradable (non-biodegradable, BOD degradability: 7% (Biodegradation and Bioconcentration of Existing Chemical Substances under the Chemical Substances Control Law, 1982)). |
