As the results of a mouse inhalation exposure test of 2-methylcyclohexanone, irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract has been reported (PATTY (5th, 2001)), and as characteristics of an isomeric mixture of methylcyclohexanones, at low concentrations, it was described to be irritating to the eyes, the nasal cavity, and the throat (PATTY (5th, 2001)). In addition, anesthesia and hypothermia were observed in rabbits that survived dermal administration of 2-methylcyclohexanone (PATTY (5th, 2001)), and rabbits or cats became somnolent within one hour after exposure to 2-methylcyclohexanone via inhalation (ACGIH (2001)). Also as characteristics of high concentration exposure of an isomeric mixture of methylcyclohexanones, inhibition of the central nervous system and anesthesia were indicated (PATTY (5th, 2001)). - - A test in which rabbits were exposed by inhalation of an isomeric mixture of methylcyclohexanones solely provided data on repeated exposure. Exposure of methylcyclohexanones at 182 and 514 ppms for 10 weeks (90-day conversion, 0.64, 1.81 mg/L) or 1139 and 1822 ppms for 3 weeks (90-day conversion, 1.21, 2.04 mg/L) caused a few minor effects, including slight conjunctival congestion, but no major toxicities (PATTY (5th, 2001)). However, since the test substance was not 2-methylcyclohexanone but an isomeric mixture of methylcyclohexanones, the tested animal species was rabbit only and the test was performed many years ago (1943), and details of the testing design, including the number of used animals, inspected organs (other than the liver and the kidneys) are not indicated, it is doubtful that the substance should be classified into "Not classified", so it was classified into "Classification not possible".
