(2) Methylenediphenyl isocyanate (MDI) is known as an eye irritant (SIAR (2003), CICAD (2000)).
(3) It is reported that in an eye irritation test with rabbits (OECD TG405, GLP-compliant, n = 3), after application of an undiluted isomer mixture containing this substance (2,2'-MDI: 0.64%, 2,4'-MDI: 53.60%, 4,4'-MDI: 45.72%), scores for corneal opacity, iris, conjunctival redness, and chemosis were 0 after 72 hours, and eye irritation was not seen (REACH registration dossier (Accessed Dec. 2018)).
(4) It is reported that in an eye irritation test with rabbit (n = 6), after application of an undiluted this substance (MDI isomer mixture, purity 92-95%), macroscopic observation showed no immediate change in the cornea, moderate conjunctivitis was found after 24 hours, and four out of six animals recovered within seven days while conjunctivitis persisted in the other two (REACH registration dossier (Accessed Dec. 2018)).
(5) As for methylenediphenyl isocyanate including 4,4'-isomer, skin disorders, anterior eye disorders, or respiratory tract disorders were designated as occupational diseases based on Appended Table 1-2, (iv) 1 of the Ordinance for Enforcement of the Labor Standards Act.
