1 | Acute toxicity (Oral) | Not classified |
- |
- | - | Based on LD50 values of >3200 mg/kg, >5000 mg/kg, 6200 mg/kg, 7660 mg/kg and 5600 mg/kg for rats (SIDS (2000)), the substance was classified into "Not classified". | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
1 | Acute toxicity (Dermal) | Not classified |
- |
- | - | Based on LD50 values of 2730 mg/kg and >5000 mg/kg for rabbits (SIDS (2000)), the substance was classified as "Not classified". | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |

1 | Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) | Category 4 |
Warning |
H332 | P304+P340 P261 P271 P312 |
Based on a LC50 value of 57 mg/L/4h (16186 ppmV/4h) for rats (SIDS (2000)), the substance was classified into Category 4. Since the LC50 value was lower than 90% of saturated vapour pressure concentration (65789.5 ppmV), the classification criteria for gas was adopted. | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |

Warning |
H315 | P302+P352 P332+P313 P362+P364 P264 P280 P321 |
Based on results of skin primary irritation index (PII: 2.83) after application for 4-hour in a rabbit test (OECD TG404) (SIDS (2000)) and "strong irritating "after application for 24-hour in another rabbit test (SIDS (2000)), the substance was classified into Category 2. | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
3 | Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Category 2 |
Warning |
H319 | P305+P351+P338 P337+P313 P264 P280 |
Based on results of "irritating" in 4/10 rabbits in a Draize test (SIDS (2000)) and "marked irritation "in another rabbit test (SIDS (2000)), the substance was classified into Category 2. | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
4 | Respiratory sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
4 | Skin sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | There is a result of not skin sensitizing in 29 volunteers in a maximization test with a 1% solution in petrolatum (SIDS (2000)). It is reported that this result may not totally preclude a hazard of sensitization of the concentrated material after repeated exposure, but the material is not regarded as a potent sensitizer (SIDS (2000)). Since this report does not provide a clear no skin sensitization conclusion, classification as "Not classified" is questionable, therefore, the substance was classified as "Classification not possible". |
FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Not classified |
- |
- | - | Based on negative result in a intraperitoneal injection mouse bone marrow micronucleus test (OECD TG474) (in vivo somatic cell mutagenicity tests) (SIDS (2000)), the substance was classified as "Not classified". As relevant information, from in vitro tests, there is a report of a negative Ames test (SIDS (2000)). | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. As relevant information, according to assessment in SIDS (SIDS (2000)), it is concluded that the substance is highly unlikely to cause selective fetal toxicity and also not expected to exert prenatal toxicity from the reproductive and developmental toxicity data of the structurally related propionaldehyde, isobutyraldehyde and 3-methylbutanol-1. | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Category 3 (Respiratory tract irritation) |
Warning |
H335 | P304+P340 P403+P233 P261 P271 P312 P405 P501 |
There is a report that seven chemists, who were accidentally exposed to the substance leaking from a laboratory apparatus for several days, showed toxic effects such as tightness in the chest, irritation of the upper respiratory tract, cough, dyspnea. All individuals recovered rapidly following removal of the source of the leak (SIDS (2000)). Additionally there is a report that the mucus membranes of the nasal and the upper respiratory tract are affected upon exposure, producing a burning sensation, bronchial constriction, choking, and coughing (HSDB (2003)). The compound was classified into Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation). | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. As relevant information, there is a report that "The relatively uniform toxicity profiles of aldehydes allow an estimation of toxicity of this product on the basis of data of aldehydes. For systemic effects in the tested aldehydes the NOAEL for oral uptake is 300 mg/kg, the NOAELs for inhalation are >150 ppm" (SIDS (2000)). | FY2009 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (March, 2009) |
