1 | Acute toxicity (Oral) | Category 3 |
Danger |
H301 | P301+P310 P264 P270 P321 P330 P405 P501 |
Since its LD50 = 83 mg/kg for mice (HSBD (2003)) and the substance is rate R25 in EU classification (EU Annex I (accessed July 2008)), it was classified into Category 3. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
1 | Acute toxicity (Dermal) | Category 2 |
Danger |
H310 | P302+P352 P361+P364 P262 P264 P270 P280 P310 P321 P405 P501 |
Since its LD50 = 125 mg/kg for guinea pigs (RTECS (2008): National Technical Information Service. (Springfield, VA 22161), Formerly U.S. Clearinghouse for Scientific & Technical Information, OTS0571891), the substance was classified into Category 2. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

Two human cases of severe and bullous contact dermatitis have been reported (HSDB (2003)), and it is rated R35 in EU classification (EU Annex I (assessed on July, 2008)) and its pH = 1.4 (20degC, 50 g/L) (GESTIS (accessed July 2008)). Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
3 | Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Category 1 |
Danger |
H318 | P305+P351+P338 P280 P310 |
It has been documented to be a high irritant to human eyes and mucous membrane (HSDB (2003)), and rated R35 in EU classification (EU Annex I (accessed July 2008)) and its pH = 1.4 (20degC, 50 g/L) (GESTIS (accessed July 2008)). Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1. As relevant information, it is also classified as a corrosive agent to skin. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
4 | Respiratory sensitization | Classification not possible |

5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | The only available datum is a weakly positive result from an Ames test (NTP DB (accessed July 2008)), and no other data are known. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | The only available report is that subcutaneous administration to rats for 596 days produced a case of fibroma, a case of fibrosarcoma, and a case of plasma cell sarcoma (HSDB (2003)). No other data are known, thus, the substance cannot be classified. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Non-oral administration to mice has been reported to cause defective ribs and vertebras and cleft palate (Birth Defects (3rd, 2000)). However, this study was performed relatively many years ago (1959, 1973), and does not provide information on such factors as the administration route and doses. Thus the substance cannot be classified due to lack of data. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Category 2 (eye) |
Warning |
H371 | P308+P311 P260 P264 P270 P405 P501 |
Human exposure studies showed that the substance is toxic to essentially all parts of the eye, the cornea, iris, lens, ciliary body, and retina, when either applied directly or administered systemically (HSDB (2003)). In addition, its intravenous injection in rabbits, cats, and rats were found to induce cataracts, as well as to affect each part of the eye, such as lens, iris, and retina (HSDB (2003)). Since adverse effects on the human eyes after whole body exposure is indicated in the document of List 2, the substance was classified into Category 2 (eye). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Category 2 (systemic) |
Warning |
H373 | P260 P314 P501 |
The substance is documented to be highly capable of causing death or permanent injury due to exposures of normal use to humans (HSDB (2003)), and is reported that exposure orally to rats in their diet, 50 - 70 mg/kg/day has been found to be fatal in 10 - 40 days (HSDB (2003)). These human and rat data included in List 2 provide findings of death only, and do not provide findings on target organs. Thus, the substance was classified into Category 2 (systemic toxicity). | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
