As for experimental animals, in several carcinogenicity studies using mice administered with drinking water containing trichloroacetic acid (TCA) neutralized with sodium hydroxide, an increase in the incidence of liver tumours (hepatocellular adenoma/ hepatocellular carcinoma) in both male and female were observed. TCA was classified as Group 2B by IARC (IARC 106 (2014)). As for the carcinogenicity classification of TCA, ACGIH classified it as A3 (ACGIH (7th, 2001)) and EPA classified it as S (IRIS Summary (2011)). However, in a study using pregnant rats administered (gestation days 6 through 15) by gavage with trichloroacetic acid (TCA), an increase in the frequency of cardiovascular system malformations and skeletal malformations as well as an increase in embryo absorption and a decrease in fetus weights, were observed at the doses where maternal toxicity (a decrease in weight gain, an increase in kidney and spleen weights) were observed (ACGIH (7th, 2001), HSDB (Access on June 2015)).  It is reported that in humans, painful irritation of the nasal and pharyngeal cavities, the trachea and the lungs were seen after inhalation of this substance (BUA 167 (1995)). The substance was classified in Category 2 (respiratory organs) because the source of this information is listed in List 2. Moreover, it is described that ataxia, sedation, decreased reflexes, and coma were observed in a single-dose oral exposure study using rats, and that sedation and coma were observed in a single-dose oral exposure using dogs although no details on the doses are available (BUA 167 (1995)).
