Uranium ignites spontaneously when broken down into small pieces (Lide (84th, 2003)). Dust of uranium metal ignite at ordinary temperature (HSDB (2006)). Its minimum flashing point is 20degC (dust) (HSDB (2006)). Based on these descriptions, the substance was classified into Category 1. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

- | - | Although uranium metal and uranium dioxide are not considered to be chemically irritating to the eyes, both are abrasive and could cause physical damage (IUCLID (2000)). However, since specific data are not available, classification is not possible. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |

Since it is rated as A1 by the ACGIH (2001), the substance was classified into Category 1. The following have been documented as human epidemiological information: 1) excessive mortality by lung cancer or central nervous system cancer among 18869 white males who worked at a uranium enrichment plant, 2) confirmation of excessive mortality by lung cancer, central nervous system cancer, renal cancer, lymphosarcomas and multiple myeloma in cohorts of the plant workers in follow-up surveys, and 3) confirmation of excessive mortality by esophageal cancer, laryngeal cancer, all respiratory diseases and pneumonia among 2731 males who worked at other uranium refining and processing facility (ACGIH (2001)). |

7 | Reproductive toxicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Although there are reports on animal reproductive and developmental toxicity tests on uranium compounds (uranyl nitrate and uranyl acetate) (ATSDR (1999)), they are not on uranium metal. In addition, there are research results suggesting the effects of alpha radiation on Y chromosome as indicated by that fact that uranium mine workers have many female children relative to male children; however, it is uncertain if the effects are due to uranium (ATSDR (1999)). Overall, classification is not possible due to lack of data on uranium metal. | FY2008 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008) |
8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Category 1 (kidney) |
Danger |
H370 | P308+P311 P260 P264 P270 P321 P405 P501 |
In animal experiments, systemic toxicity (oral, dermal, and inhalation) of uranium compounds (uranyl acetate and uranyl nitrate) has been documented (ATSDR (1999)); however, the study is not of uranium metal. Similarly, systemic toxicity of uranium compounds (uranyl acetate) when administered to humans has been documented (ATSDR (1999)); however the study is not of uranium metal. According to the ACGIH, uranium exposure in all animals and humans causes acute toxicity, and it causes necrosis of the proximal tubules, loop of Henle and collecting tubules, accompanied with loss of functions of the kidney, the main target organ of this substance (ACGIH (7th, 2001)); thus, the substance was classified into Category 1 (kidney). |
