It is described that finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air (ICSC (2004)). For mechanically-produced powders with particle size less than 53 microns or chemically-produced powders with particle size less than 840 microns, if wetted with water, it is classified in Division 4.1, PG II (UN 1358) in UNRTDG, therefore, it is classified in Category 1. On the other hand, dry one is classified in Division 4.2, PG I, II, III (UN 2008) in UNRTDG. Because it is thought that the dry one is more combustible than the wet one, it was classified in Category 1 regardless of whether it is dry or wet. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
8 | Self-reactive substances and mixtures | Not classified (Not applicable) |

10 | Pyrophoric solids | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Because it is described that an autoignition temperature is > 200 deg C (HSDB (Access on September 2015)), it is classified as "Not classified." On the other hand, a dry zirconium powder is classified in Division 4.2, PG I, II, III (UN 2008) in UNRTDG, and if PG I is allocated, it is classified in Category 1. From the above, because a tendency to ignite spontaneously is different depending on particle size and so on, the unified classification cannot be given for the substance. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
11 | Self-heating substances and mixtures | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | A dry zirconium powder is classified in Division 4.2, PG I, II, III (UN 2008) in UNRTDG. If PG I is allocated, it is classified as "Not applicable" because it is pyrophoric solid, and if PG II is allocated, it is classified in Category 1, and if PG III is allocated, it is classified in Category 2. Because a self-heating property is different depending on particle size and so on, the unified classification cannot be given for the substance. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
12 | Substances and mixtures which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases | Not classified |
- |
- | - | It is estimated that it does not react vigorously with water from the observation result that it is insoluble in water (ICSC (2004)). | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |

4 | Respiratory sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, zirconium and zirconium compounds were classified as respiratory sensitizing substance in DFGOT vol. 12 (1999). However, this substance was classified as "Classification not possible" since it could not be determined whether it was applicable to this substance or not. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
4 | Skin sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, there are epidemiological studies that this substance and zirconium compounds cause epithelioid granuloma skin sensitization to humans, and a report that zirconium compounds cause delayed hypersensitivity to experimental animals (DFGOT vol. 12 (1999)). Also, this substance and zirconium compounds were classified as a skin sensitizer in DFGOT vol. 12 (1999). But, it was not judged as sensitizer by ACGIH because sufficient data were not available (ACGIH (7th, 2001)). From the above, this substance was classified as "Classification not possible." | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | There is no information on carcinogenicity in humans. As for experimental animals, in a study in which rats were orally given 5 ppm of zirconium sulfate for their lifetime, no difference in survival time and tumor incidence between the zirconium administered group and the control group was observed (ACGIH (7th, 2001), DFGOT vol. 12 (1999)). Zirconium and zirconium compounds were classified in A4 for carcinogenicity by ACGIH based on the test results of rats (ACGIH (7th, 2001)). Therefore, it was classified as "Classification not possible" for this hazard class. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |

H335 | P304+P340 P403+P233 P261 P271 P312 P405 P501 |
Based on a description that this substance is irritating to the respiratory tract (ACGIH (7th, 2001)), this substance was classified in Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation). | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, in 22 workers who were exposed to fumes of zirconium (zirconium chloride, zirconium oxide, metallic zirconium) in a refining and reduction process for 1-5 years (the amount of exposure was not specified), no pulmonary granulomas were observed, but mild bronchial asthma in 2 workers and chronic bronchitis in 5 workers were observed. However, there are reports that some of these people had also been exposed to chlorine (DFGOT Vol.12 (1999), Reed (1956) cited in DFGOT Vol.12 (1999)). Also, based on the same information, it is described in ACGIH (7th, 2001) and PATTY (6th, 2012) that there were no (striking) abnormalities related to zirconium. |
