2 | Skin corrosion/irritation | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, there is a description that since this substance hydrolyzes to form hydrochloric acid, irritation may be seen on contact with the skin (PATTY (6th, 2012)). | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
3 | Serious eye damage/eye irritation | Classification not possible |

4 | Respiratory sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, zirconium and zirconium compounds were classified as respiratory organs sensitizing substance in DFGOT vol. 12 (1999). However, this substance was classified as "Classification not possible" since information on this substance itself could not be obtained. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
4 | Skin sensitization | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Classification not possible due to lack of data. Besides, there is a report that sensitization was not seen by application of this substance in a test with human volunteers (ACGIH (2001), DFGOT Vol.12 (1999)). On the other hand, zirconium and zirconium compounds were classified as sensitizers (Sah) by DFGOT (DFGOT vol. 12 (1999)). However, this substance was classified as "Classification not possible" since information on this substance itself could not be obtained. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | As for in vivo, a chromosomal aberration test on mouse bone marrow cells by oral administration was positive (DFGOT Vol.12 (1999), PATTY (6th, 2012)). As for in vitro, a bacterial reverse mutation test was negative, and a chromosome aberration test and a sister chromatid exchange test with cultured mammalian cells were positive (DFGOT Vol.12 (1999), HSDB (Access on September 2015)). Besides, it was classified as "Classification not possible" according to the GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government because the positive finding adopted in the previous classification is questionable. | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | As classification results by other organizations, ACGIH classified zirconium and zirconium compounds in A4 (ACGIH (7th, 2001)). This substance was classified as "Classification not possible" for this hazard class since it also corresponds to this group of substances. Besides, please refer to this hazard class for zirconium (CAS RN 7440-67-7). | FY2015 | GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government (FY2013 revised edition (Ver. 1.1)) |

There are reports that respiratory tract irritation occurs in the process of hydrolysis of this substance to hydrochloric acid (PATTY (6th, 2012), HSDB (Access on September 2015)), and that this substance causes respiratory tract irritation (ACGIH (7th, 2001)). In addition, there is a report that acute intoxication symptoms caused by oral ingestion in humans were a burning sensation in the mouth and throat, vomiting, watery or bloody diarrhea, tenesmus (convulsions), nausea, hemolysis, hematuria, anuria, liver damage with jaundice, convulsions, and hypotension (PATTY (6th, 2012)). There are no data on experimental animals. From the above, in addition to respiratory tract irritation, this substance is thought to affect the nervous system, liver, and haemal system. Therefore, this substance was classified in Category 1 (nervous system, liver, haemal system), Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation). Since the effects on the gastrointestinal system, urinary system, and circulatory organ system adopted in the previous classification were not observed, they were not adopted. |
