It is reported that mice exposed to low vapor concentrations showed breathlessness, cyanosis, and mucosal irritation as well as agitated motor activity and convulsions (HSDB (2010)), and the animals which died in the post-observation period showed edema in the brain and lung as well as degenerative effects in the liver, and distinct lung damage (HSDB (2010), GESTIS (Access on Dec. 2010)).
An LC50 value of 0.23 mg/L/4h corresponds to Category 1 in accordance with the Guidance values, but it was classified in Category 2 (respiratory system) because data were from List 2 and that does not meet Decision Criteria 1b3).
Besides, there are warnings that "breathing phenyl trichlorosilane can irritate the lungs causing coughing and/or shortness of breath," and "higher exposures can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), a medical emergency, with severe shortness of breath" (HSFS (2000)).
