Warning |
H315 | P302+P352 P332+P313 P362+P364 P264 P280 P321 |
Based on the report that ceramic fibres cause skin irritation to workers who handle them (ACGIH, 2001), the substance was classified into Category 2. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |

5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Regarding in vitro mutagenicity tests, a chromosomal aberration test using human embryonic lung cells gave positive results (IARC 81, 2002) and a micronucleus test using CHO cells also yielded positive results (IARC 81, 2002). However, since no appropriate in vivo test results are available, classification is not possible. | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |
6 | Carcinogenicity | Category 2 |
Warning |
H351 | P308+P313 P201 P202 P280 P405 P501 |
Refractory ceramic fibres are rated as "2B" by the IARC 81 (2002) and man-made mineral fibers (ceramic fibers and micro glass fibers) are rated as "2B" by the Japan Society for Occupational Health (2007). Based on these ratings, the substance was classified into Category 2. As additional background information, refractory ceramic fibres are rated as "A2" by the ACGIH (1996). | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |

Warning |
H335 | P304+P340 P403+P233 P261 P271 P312 P405 P501 |
Based on the report that ceramic fibres cause temporary upper respiratory tract irritation to workers who handle them (ACGIH, 2001), the substance was classified into Category 3 (respiratory tract irritation). | FY2007 | GHS Classification Manual (10 Feb, 2006)/Technical Guidance Document on the GHS Classification (6 Dec, 2005) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Category 1 (lung) |
Danger |
H372 | P260 P264 P270 P314 P501 |
In humans, a loss of forced vital capacity of the lung was noted in workers exposed to refractory ceramic fibres (IARC 81, 2002). In test animals, pulmonary fibrosis was found in rats that underwent inhalation exposure to 9 or 18 mg/m3 (75 or 120 fibres/cc; diameter, 1 micrometer; length, 30 micrometers) of ceramic fibres for 18 months (ACGIH, 2001). In male Syrian golden hamsters exposed for 18 months by nose-only inhalation for 6 hours per day on 5 days per week to 30 mg/m3 (approximately 220 fibres/cm3; diameter, 1 micrometer; length, 25 micrometers) or lower concentrations of ceramic fibres, inflammation of the lung was noted histologically as macrophage infiltration (IARC 81, 2002). Based on these reports, we determine that the lung is the target organ. Thus, the substance was classified into Category 1 (lung). |
