1 | Acute toxicity (Oral) | Not classified |
- |
- | - | Based on the rat LD50 value of > 12800 mg/kg bw (HSDB (2007)), the substance was classified as "Not classified". | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
1 | Acute toxicity (Dermal) | Not classified |

2 | Skin corrosion/irritation | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | Insufficient data were available. As relevant information, application of 2.0 to 16.0 g/kg of the substance caused mild to moderate erythema 24 and 48 hours after application in the rabbit test (HSDB (2007)), but the details of the test were unknown. | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |

The substance was classified as Category 1 based on the document that the substance was used as a sunscreen, the allergic reaction was reported, and the substance was listed as a sensitizer (Contact Dermatitis, Frosch, 4th (2006)). As relevant information, in the human case, photosensitivity was revealed based on the photo patch test with a 42-year-old woman who had the recurrence of sunlight provoked eczematous eruptions (NTP TOX21 (1992), HSDB (2007)). And it was also reported that a 62-year-old man with the clinical history of photosensitivity developed contact dermatitis after usage of sunscreen containing the substance, and revealed positive reactions in patch test (HSDB (2007)). | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
5 | Germ cell mutagenicity | Not classified |
- |
- | - | The substance was classified as "Not classified" based on the negative results in two in vivo mutagenicity tests in somatic cells, both of the micronucleus test using peripheral blood from mice in the 13-week feeding administration (NTP TOX 21 (1992)) and the chromosome aberration test using bone marrow cells of rats orally administered (HSDB (2007)). As relevant information, as for in vitro studies, negative results in the Ames test except for data showing weakly positive results in TA 97 strain with S9 (NTP DB (1985, 1982)) and positive results in the chromosome aberration test using CHO cells with S9 (NTP TOX 21 (1992)) were reported. | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |

8 | Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | No data available. | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
9 | Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure | Classification not possible |
- |
- | - | In the 13-week feeding studies in rats and mice, the NOAELs were reported to be 25000 ppm (converted value as that of the actual intake: 1250 mg/kg/day) in rats and 6250 ppm (converted value as that of the actual intake: 313 mg/kg/day) in mice, based on renal lesions such as papillary necrosis and/or dilatation of renal tubules (NTP TOX21 (1992)). Thus, the classification corresponded to "Not classified" for oral route. While in the 13-week dermal study in mice, it was reported that the epididymal sperm density was decreased at 23 mg/kg/day or higher (NTP TOX21 (1992)). However, the details were unknown and none of the test data were available for inhalation exposure. Therefore, "Classification not possible" was justified for the classification for specific target organ toxicity (repeated exposure). | FY2010 | GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (July, 2010) |
