Rationale for the classification Classification year (FY) GHS Classification Guidance for the Japanese Government
1 Acute toxicity (Oral) Not classified
-
-
- - Since its rat LD50 is > 5000 mg/kg bw (JMPR (1991)), the substance was classified into "Not classified". FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
1 Acute toxicity (Dermal) Not classified
-
-
- - Since its rat LD50 is > 5000 mg/kg bw (JMPR (1991)), the substance was classified into "Not classified". FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Gases) Not classified (Not applicable)
-
-
- - Solid (GHS definition) FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Vapours) Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available. FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
1 Acute toxicity (Inhalation: Dusts and mists) Classification not possible
-
-
- - Based on its rat LC50 of > 2.0 mg/kg bw/4h (JMPR (1991)), classification of the substance cannot be determined between Category 3 and "Not classified".; thus, the substance was classified into "Classification not possible". Since the test concentration was > 2.0 mg/L, which was higher than the saturated vapour concentration of the test substance (2.90E-004 mg/L), we determined that the test substance was in a dust state. FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
2 Skin corrosion/irritation Not classified
-
-
- - In the tests using rabbits that were treated with the substance for 4 hours, skin irritation was not observed 72 hours after the application (JMPR (1991)); thus, the substance was classified into "Not classified". FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
3 Serious eye damage/eye irritation Category 2B
-
Warning
H320 P305+P351+P338
P337+P313
P264
In rabbit tests, the application caused slight irritation, and signs of irritation were not observed 48 hours after application (JMPR (1991)). Based on these results, we determined that the effects are reversible and classified the substance into Category 2B. FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
4 Respiratory sensitization Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available. FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
4 Skin sensitization Not classified
-
-
- - Tests using guinea pigs (maximization tests) found that the substance is not sensitizing (JMPR (1991)), and other tests using guinea pigs found the same (Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). Thus, the substance was classified into "Not classified". FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
5 Germ cell mutagenicity Not classified
-
-
- - Based on negative results found in both micronucleus tests using bone marrow cells of mice that underwent oral administration, and chromosomal aberration tests using bone marrow cells of Chinese hamsters (both tests are in vivo mutagenicity tests using somatic cells) (JMPR (1991)), the substance was classified into "Not classified". With regard to in vitro mutagenicity tests, both Ames tests and chromosomal aberration tests using cultured CHO cells gave negative results (JMPR (1991); Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) FOOD SANITATION RESEARCH No.149, 1999)) FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
6 Carcinogenicity Not classified
-
-
- - In 104-week oral administration (mixed diet) tests using rats, incidences of tumorigenesis did not increase due to administration (JMPR (1991)). On the other hand, in 104-week oral administration (mixed diet) tests using mice, the incidence of hyperplastic nodes consisting of proliferating hepatocytes was increased in both sexes (rate of incidence: 52+104 weeks, 60 rats), and an increase in the incidence of hepatocellular adenomas or carcinomas was also observed at the end of the study (JMPR (1991)). Given these results, the US EPA has placed the substance in Category C. As such, we classified the substance into the "Not classified" category. FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
7 Reproductive toxicity Not classified
-
-
- - In oral administration tests conducted during the organogenetic period using either pregnant rats or pregnant rabbits, no changes due to administration were detected in terms of the total number of implantations, number of corpora lutea, number of surviving embryos and fetuses, and mortality or number of embryo resorption across maternal animals (Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). Given these results, no changes by administration are detected on sex ratio, external abnormalities, skeletal abnormalities, or visceral abnormalities in embryos and fetuses (Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). In addition, no signs of teratogenicity were detected in embryos and fetuses by administration of 2160 mg/kg/day to rats or administration of 1080 mg/kg/day to rabbits (JMPR (1991), Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). Furthermore, in two-generation reproduction tests using rats that underwent oral administration, no effects of administration on reproduction of parental animals were detected in terms of mating rate, pregnancy rate, birthrate, or number of pups (Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). Also, no effects of administration on offspring were detected in terms of survival rate of newborn offspring, or development and differentiation (Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). It is concluded based on these results that no reproduction inhibitory effects or teratogenic effects are associated with this substance (JMPR (1991), Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). Accordingly, the substance was classified into "Not classified". FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
8 Specific target organ toxicity - Single exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - No data available. FY2008 GHS Classification Guidance by the Japanese Government (Sep, 2008)
9 Specific target organ toxicity - Repeated exposure Classification not possible
-
-
- - In 13-week oral administration (mixed diet) tests using rats, changes in hematological parameters and biochemical values were detected in both sexes at >= 500 ppm (25 mg/kg), which falls under Category 2 guidance doses; swelling of hepatocytes in the central zone was observed in both sexes at 3500 ppm (175 mg/kg), which is above Category 2 guidance doses; and fatty degeneration of the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex was observed in both sexes at 500 ppm (25 mg/kg) (JMPR (1991), IRIS (2002), Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999). In addition, a decrease in plasma cholinesterase was detected in female rats treated with 500 or 3500 ppm while no abnormalities were detected in the brain or with red blood cell cholinesterase (IRIS (2002), Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). In 28-day oral administration (mixed diet) tests using mice, swollen liver cells were observed in male rats treated with >= 1800 ppm (90-day conversion: 90 mg/kg) and in female rats treated with 10800 ppm (90-day conversion: 540 mg/kg) (JMPR (1991), Pesticide Safety Information (Japan Crop Protection Association) (AGCHEM AGE No.154, 1999)). Overall, notable effects of administration were not identified other than hepatocyte hypertrophy in the liver and adipose degeneration of fascicular zone in the adrenal cortex. However, due to lack of additional information, the substance was classified into "Classification not possible" instead of "Not classified".
