ethylmalonyl-CoAの作成に関与する。
polyhydroxybutyrate depolymeraseはpolyhydroxybutyrateから3-hydroxybutyrateへ分解。
この3-hydroxybutyrateは、cluster内には見当たらないがS.hygroscopicusにはある可能性があるというCoA ligaseによって3-hydroxybutyryl-CoAとなる。

他では一次代謝産物acetoacetyl-CoAの還元から3-hydroxybutyryl-CoAはもたらされるとされるが、この株ではpolyhydroxybutyrate分解が優性ルートであるかもしれない。

実験的な裏づけはなし。
