AurI はStreptomyces maritimusのEncKに相同性がある。
EncKはenterocin生合成においてpyrone O-methylTFとして機能する。
よってAurI はpyrone O-methyl基の導入を担うことが推定される。

不活化、相補、生物変換実験により、furan環形成に先立って、最後から2番目の生合成ステップとしてgamma-pyrone methylationが起こることがわかっている。

また、AurI がO-methyltransferaseとして同定され、aureothin polyketide前駆体にmethionine由来methyl unitを位置特異的に導入し、methyl化されたgamma-pyrone環を得る。
