Escherichia coli K-12においてシキミ酸の輸送に関与するshiA遺伝子をクローニングしてシークエンス。ShiAはそのアミノ酸配列からMFS superfamilyに属する。shiA破壊株ではシキミ酸の輸送ができなくなった。シキミ酸を芳香環の供与体として添加したときに生育できるaroE strainでshiAを高発現させると、dehydroshikimate (DHS)が蓄積し、シキミ酸の輸送が阻害された(シキミ酸の前駆体であるDHSによってシキミ酸輸送が調節されている)。E. coliではshiAの発現は、芳香族アミノ酸の生合成と輸送に関与する遺伝子群の発現を調節するTyrAでは制御されていないようだった。
