fkbSはcrotonyl-CoA reductaseをコードする(相同性から)。
crotonyl-CoA → butyryl-CoA
この反応はethylmalonyl-CoAの作成に関与する。

fkbSはstrain14891でのbutyryl-CoA生合成に必要かもしれないが、他のpolyketide産生株でのbutyryl-CoA生合成はclusterの外にある遺伝子によってコードされるcrotonyl-CoA reductaseにもっと依存的であるらしい。
