cotAのPromoterと、転写開始点をsporulation(胞子形成)と germination (発芽)の色々なmutantを作成したり、調節領域付近のdeletion mutantを作成し調べている。
結局、胞子形成中期の様々な遺伝子の発現にcatAが絡んでいるのではないかと考察している。

B.subtilisのspore coat protein CotAは、manganese oxidasesやlaccasesといったmulticopper oxidasesに似ている。

B.subtilisはmanganeseを酸化できるが、CotAもその他のsporulation proteinsも関連しない。
laccasesの特異的な基質であるsyringaldazineは、wild-type sporesと反応するがdelta-cotA sporesとは反応しない。
よってCotAはlaccaseである。

CotAは、メラニン様でUV抵抗性のある茶色いspore pigmentの生合成に関与するかもしれない。
